There were some...
1. So seeing the patient journey through the ED, gaining a greater understanding of how patients flow around the department and to different areas of the hospital.
2. Staff - meeting a range of different staff and developing a better understanding of their roles and responsibilities.
3. Saw a couple of high-acuity patients.

There were quite a few of these...
1. It was very difficult to get away from nursing staff and spend time with doctors. I was encouraged by one nurse to ‘take some obs’ (in a happy voice), which was fine, but after informing her that I have done this every single shift for the last ten years, she just continued to have me do obs. This was also despite me asking to do more and see more.
2. I was not particularly well received by the doctors, one or two sure, but a number seemed reluctant to teach and engage.
3. It was also tough being in a department for the first time for placement. Just being unfamiliar with the hospital, where stuff was etc, made it a bit more stressful.

I spent my week divided between paediatrics and minor injuries. I found the minor injury very satisfying as I got to see the patients journey thru the department. I was surprised by the sort of cases that went thru minor injuries and was surprised how many chest pain complaints they dealt with. I found all the staff very friendly and helpful.

I found working within the paediatric A&E difficult as I was only able to observe and couldn’t really get hands on with the patient’s. Most of the children attended for minor problems. I did get to engage with a couple of children who had broken bones and were awaiting surgery, I was surprised how long it took for these children to be seen by the orthopaedic surgeons and to be admitted and taken to the ward.
