The student's actions of cheating in the exam certainly present an ethical dillema that challenges the teacher's role assigned to her. The teacher's responsibilities, through our perspectives, will overpower her favoritism and bias to the student. It is essential for the student to play in a level playing field without any advantages assigned to them. The teacher should alert higher ups.

We believe that the teacher should report the student to the IB board. This is so because there have been past instances where he cheated. The teacher signed an agreement to be unbiased and report academic dishonesty. However, the teacher may be partially biased due to the fact that she really likes the student and hence may not be in the right mind actually to make the decision.
The student is predicted to pass, but it is possible that the student is only passing due to his prior cheating. Because of this, it would be unfair to let the student pass even though he has not put in the work. Further, it would be unfair to the other students giving the exam who are not cheating, since results are compared against other students.

By Anika and Anwita

The teacher should report the student to the relevant authorities since it is their obligation as an IB examiner. Their emotions should not interfere with their professional duty.
There are students all over the world taking the examination for this international diploma, and it will be unfair for them as well. If the teacher chooses not to report this incident, they will overshadow the efforts put in by students who genuinely want to pass.
The student may have pressure from society to succeed, but that does not justify his actions- other students may have similar pressures/incentives to do well, but unlike him, they do not resort to the act of cheating. Personal reasoning does not justify unethical acts.

If you're cheating, cheat properly, otherwise don't.

We think that the teacher should warn the student and allow him/her to continue writing the exam. If the student is seen cheating again in the exam, then suitable action should be taken(for example- the death penalty or reporting him/her to the IBO)

why- we are also students and we relate to the student's circumstances. IB is a rigorous course and puts a lot of pressure on the students and we know how it feels. However, this does not justify the student cheating as it would be unfair to the other IB students giving the exam. But, just because of one mistake one's career must not be sacrificed.

By: Lakshya Bajaj and Aarush Khanna

The student should be reported since cheating by itself is unethical. And no one else writing the exam was seen cheating, it is the teacher's professional responsibility to not let a student have special advantages during an exam.

However, the teacher might not report the student since they are aware that the student is under pressure to succeed from his family. The student was also predicted to pass the exam, so cheating might not effect the gardes as much. Another factor playing into the moral decision is that the teacher really likes the student and hence they will have a bias towards them.

According to her job, the teacher should report the student for his actions. Cheating is considered immoral depending on the individual, it reflects that the student is decreasing trust, ruining his social integrity. Since, the student has been caught cheating before I believe that the teacher had instances that she could have reported the student and she didn’t, which resulted in the student cheating on his final exam.

The teacher should report the student. If the teacher allows the student to continue cheating it would creates a bias-a student is treated differently than others- which can possibly ruin the whole academic system as one of its core values is to provide equal opportunities to all. While giving the exam, the student’s popularity or pressure put on him doesn’t matter because him cheating may be moral for him but it is not ethical

I believe that as an educator, the teacher has taken on certain responsibilities. Even as students we are expected to uphold certain responsibilities, one of them being Academic Integrity, which the student in this situation has clearly violated. So in my opinion the teacher should report this incident to the IB authorities. We should also consider various other factors, such as the fact that the student has previously cheated. It is also mentioned that the student is predicted to pass, however the student could be passing only due to prior cheating, and since all IB students are assessed under identical conditions, it would be giving this student an unfair advantage which would be unethical.

The test would be strictly invigilated where any forms of cheating would lead to strict consequences such as not obtaining the Ib Diploma and having a record of the incident in his college profiles. If this is executed strategically, it poses minimal risk to the teacher's career and all parties remain content. On the other hand, it is ethically correct for her to report the cheating to IB.

Academic integrity is a concept central to the IBDP, and it is a responsibility of both teachers and students to do their absolute best to uphold this ideal.

The utilisation of unfair means in the process of an examination leads to academic advantages that have not been earned, and directly puts other students at a disadvantage. The IB examination is a way of directly comparing the capabilities of IB students across the world, and cheating on this examination negatively affects the other students and harms the credibility of the Board.

Therefore there is only one ethically acceptable course of action for the teacher to take in this case.

K̵̢̧̨̛̩̘͓̜̻̪̯̥̠̗͍̞̑̎͐̚i̸̘̰̥̝͔͈̗̹̺̬̳͊̓͒̀̒́̈́̎̈́̚͝l̶̛̩̬̿̆̐́̈̄̊͆͝͝͝ļ̸̛̜̹̮͕̭͇͈͋̀̂̎̐̄̇͋̀̈́͌̚ ̸̗̤͚̈́̀͐̓̈́̒̔ẗ̶̨̟̗̙̮̮͈̗͚̯̩̜̻͉̆̐͋̃̈́͛̋̿̅̈́̀̋̕h̸͈̬̆̍̀͑͗̎̅͊̓̿̿̊̅̾̕ȩ̵̨̛̼̭͙̫͎͔͚͕͐͒̇̈́͗͌́̓̚͜ ̴̡͉͕͚͉͔͓̼̫̜̦̗͚̍̂͜͠ͅç̷̛̫̼̻̦͇̙̙̀̓̉̉͗h̷̻̻̦͇̟̫̖́̓̅͋̀̂ȋ̵͔̗̻͖̠́͋͒͗͐̀̅̾̈́̒̍͘̕͝ͅl̶̡̧̪̻̖̬̝̗̱̟̣̈́̂̽̈́͗͆̌̾̃͒̔͒͘̕͝d̵͈̥̗̪̒́̋̈̊͒

Prior to forming an opinion, I decided to view the student's scenario using three widely accepted Ethical Theories:

1. Virtue Ethics: The student's actions do not lie beyond reasonable doubt as they're still developing and are bound to make mistakes, however given the current scenario and the popularly believed notion of a virtuous person, a good student would not cheat. This can be determined considering the IBO condemns academic dishonesty, and a good student of the IBO would follow their policies.

2. Deontological Ethics: The student clearly goes against the definition of moral law prescribed by Immanuel Kant. By cheating, said student clearly has a negative intention as their aim is to achieve something that they do not deserve. Their duty is to abide by the academic integrity policies. However, it might be argued that he might have cheated on one exam to ensure that this one exam doesn’t drastically alter his academic future. That being said, there is quantifiable evidence to doubt this as the student has been know to cheat prior to this, thereby providing the thought that this might be a habit for the student. Intent can never be truly verified however given evidence lucidly suggests that the ulterior motives of this student were not pure.

3.Utilitarianism: The student’s cheating may have consequences that set precedence for developing an unhealthy work ethic for the rest of their life. If his mistake goes unaddressed, he may believe that he can get away with cutting corners and breaking the rules, which for a young and impressionable mind can be life-altering.

Considering all three approaches, I firmly believe that the teacher should address this incident in order to cultivate the student’s understanding of ethics. If the teacher truly has the best interests of the student in mind, the right thing to do would be to report the child. More than that, this is also unfair to the other students who actually worked hard and gave the examination with integrity. In accordance with the contract of the teacher, it is their obligation to report this student. Actions must have due consequences, otherwise all order will be disrupted, and justice would no longer exist in its true sense.
