Culture shouldn't just be food, traditions, language and holidays its about an individuals experience. In order to engage students in the classroom, we must become knowledge on ways to be culturally responsive and appropriate. We must examine our way of thinking when it comes to culture, like stereotypes and assumptions that can affect our classroom. The article also covers ways teachers can incorporate culture into the classroom correctly like choosing a culturally reverent curriculum, honoring home languages, and overcoming stereotypes. This article helped me see that culture is much more than what I thought it was, and that I should re-evaluate the way I think about different cultures before trying to correctly incorporate different cultures into the classroom.

Rucker, N. The article mentions how somethings teacher are clueless on some cultures which can lead students to be misunderstood. Being culturally responsive in the classroom is an impactful tool for students since it empowers them. The first step a teacher should do in order to be culturally responsive is to do an internal audit; where we reflect on the things we are ignorant about, the experiences we have faced, and the stereotypes we have formed. After this teacher should reflect on their past and current practices we have done in the classroom in order to create a change and identify your base for teaching practice. Next, students should need to evaluate their curriculum to see if they are empowering student to be culturally aware. Lastly, the teacher should evaluate her/his own biases that can get in the way. This articled walked me step by step on ways I can become culturally responsive in the classroom. I have to evaluate my thoughts on culture, my past experiences, the curriculum, and my past classroom practices in order to be culturally responsive in the classroom.

Walden University.
