History is real

I think I've had a different perspective when reading history previous to this class.

My father is big on 20th century history so I remember growing up watching war documentaries and viewing them almost as an interest or entertainment.

After taking this course, especially reading Marie Doduck's memoir, I'm seeing things differently. I think it was the fact that Marie lives in Vancouver and has been a child survivor of the Holocaust that made it especially impactful for me. I had a moment where suddenly all the old photos in history books and even of my grandparents became much more current.

The 20th century is not that far away all things considered and a lot has changed very rapidly for humanity. I think now it is especially important to learn and understand history as things are so rapidly changing to ensure the atrocities that humanity is capable of do not continue.

I thought it was really interesting learning about the Napoleonic era, because I heard the politics of that era referenced in "The Count of Monte Cristo". I also liked learning about how the ideologies of colonialism and imperialism affected each other.

You mentioned that Marie's sister had to censor certain parts of her narrative when telling her memoir. Why is that and would you say that nowadays there is now more openness towards survivors' stories?

Her story is fantastic because it offers a different perspective to a survivor's story. Most of the time when we see a Holocaust Survivor's story it's almost always about surviving the camps, her story of surviving in hiding is incredible
