Without tariffs or quotas, businesses can reach customers in other countries more easily.

Competition and Innovation: By removing trade barriers, free trade promotes competition. Companies must innovate and improve efficiency to stay competitive in a global market. This can lead to more creative solutions, better products, and faster technological advancements.

Comparative Advantage: Free trade enables countries to focus on producing goods and services in which they have a comparative advantage—meaning they can produce more efficiently than others. This allows countries to specialize, leading to more efficient global production and greater economic output.

Economic Growth: Free trade often leads to higher levels of foreign investment and economic growth. As businesses expand their reach into international markets, economies can grow faster, creating jobs, boosting incomes, and increasing overall prosperity.

Lower Prices for Consumers: Without trade barriers, consumers benefit from lower prices on imported goods. More competition means suppliers must lower costs to attract customers, which often leads to reduced prices for both domestic and foreign goods

What are the similarities?

Both Free Trade and Fair Trade is aiming at increasing wealth globally. For example, Fair Trade is aiming at maintaining tariff barriers to protect the producers while Free trade is protecting the traders against unhealthy competition.

Both Trades are regulated by specific players. Fair Trade is regulated by small businesses and communities and Free trade is regulated by the government.

However, as well as with Free Trade, there are potential problems present also with Fair Trade. As for example need to pay certification fees, higher prices of products mean limited customers.

Further, customers have available less product choice and last but not least, not all producers can access Fair Trade.

The importance of trade

International trade is a complex issue. Understandably, governments are concerned with developing and preserving the standard of living for their own people. Countries with strong economies have great influence over international trade. Many multi-national corporations have more purchasing power than most of the LDCs and the LEDCs. In their drive to maximise profits and reduce the price of their finished products, they strike hard bargains with the producers of their primary products. General Motors, Wal-Mart, Exxon Mobil and Daimler Chrysler all have revenues greater then the GDP of the 48 least-developed countries.

All countries need to trade, to exchange products of which they have a surplus for goods or services they need. Given favourable circumstances each country aims to have a trading surplus, which means the value of the goods and services it sells or exports, exceeds the value of those it buys or imports. Traditionally those countries regarded as belonging to the MEDC group have had stronger economies and more favourable trading balances, while the majority of countries classified as LEDC or LDC have suffered from significant trade deficits.

Fair trade is a social and economic movement aimed at providing more equitable trading conditions for producers, particularly in developing countries. It focuses on ensuring that producers receive fair wages, work in safe conditions, and follow environmentally sustainable practices. Fair trade often involves direct trade relationships between buyers and producers, eliminating exploitative middlemen and guaranteeing minimum prices for goods, even if market prices fall. This system seeks to empower marginalized workers and farmers, promoting ethical production and consumption, particularly in industries like coffee, cocoa, and handicrafts.

Fair trade focuses on promoting equity, sustainability and social development, while free trade emphasizes economic efficiency, market access and growth.

Advantages of free trade

Proponents of free trade point to the following virtues of this economic model:

It generates co-dependence. It makes freely trading nations dependent on each other and leads to closer trade and diplomatic ties, which reduces conflict or confrontation.

Promotes comparative advantage. It encourages countries to focus their production on their best goods, so that they can import cheaply those they are unable to produce. This brings about an improvement in the country's quality of life .

It does not distort trade.
