Polyphemus wasn't a good host he broke the greek value hospitality by "clutched at my companions
and caught two in his hands like squirming puppies to beat their brain out, spattering the floor."(Homer line 233-235). At the start of the story The Phaeacians "offers a ship to Odysseus and asks him to tell of his adventures"(Homer). The king of Phaeacians wanted the tale of the great Odysseus in exchange for a ship.

Odysseus showed so many heroic traits during this story. These traits can include Bravery, intelligence, hospitality and leadership. He showed hospitality and bravery in the cyclops episode especially when he "rammed it deep in his crater eye."(Homer line 332-333). Even though Polyphemus wasn't exactly hospitable, Odysseus still gave him all the love. "A wineskin full I brought along, and victuals in a bag,

for in my bones I knew some towering brute would be upon us soon—all outward power,

a wild man, ignorant of civility."(Homer 152-156)

Odysseus even showed perseverance on the journey home when he almost gave up. "you much think hard if you conjure up the fighting strength to take us through" (Homer 1106- 1107). He even encouraged his men to keep going when the times got really rough. He gave them simple words like "Friends, have we never been in danger before this?"(Homer line 766). Odysseus is a hero because he tried everything in his power to not let his men and himself not give up. That is why he is a hero ladies and gentlemen.
