"The greatest immediate improvement in their situation would come easily, of course, from a change of apartments"(55). Before the family was doing everything they could so they could keep their grand apartment and continue to love above their means. The fact that this is the first improvement they chose to make shows that they have come to the understanding that their situation has changed, and they need to adapt accordingly. Additionally, I think that this will begin to influence their actions, for example, the father with understand that he should not be relying on the work of two women to support their family, and they will all begin to appreciate each other instead of using one another to benefit off of someone else.

An example of this is "We will fire her tonight." (54). This tells me that the family has not been able to realize that peoples value does not come from the depth of their wallets but of their personality and work ethic. This failure will lead them in circles throughout their lives. They will continue to lose money and not end up anywhere different.

"The car, in which they were the only passengers, was completely filled with warm sunshine." - I think this is a great example of Kafka "showing" instead of "telling" that the family is ready to move on. He creates a peaceful and relieved mood through the imagery he describes in the last scene after the family leaves their apartment. They have accepted their new life without gregor and are relieved to be past that tiring stage in their lives.

"And it was like a confirmation of their new dreams and good intentions" (55). I believe that this signifies that the family has changed their way of thinking and in turn will become more productive. Although while the family will move forward as more productive, in order to obtain this they had to forsake the humanity of Gregor. While they may appear as more accomplished in a utilitarian sense, but in an ethical sense they have, at the very least, gained nothing. The fact that Grete was most adamant about getting rid of Gregor, yet is also the symbol of this new beginning solidifies this idea.

I think this conveys that they have changed because before they wanted to keep looking like they have a higher status in their bigger apartment. They know that they would pay off more of their debt if they switched to a smaller apartment. When they do get a smaller apartment, this shows that they have changed their dynamic and their mindset in a way. This is reinforced by the light and happy imagery on the last page of the book.
