"As the comments of teachers reveal, one of the persistent challenges facing educators is inadequate pay. To be sure, there are teachers in some states and communities who are paid fairly well, but most teachers are woefully underpaid," (page 4). I chose this quote because this is something I have heard a lot, both on the streets and on TV. TV has portrayed teachers as unhappy and they complain about money. I feel like this is wrong. Teachers may not get as much as lawyers or doctors, but that doesn't mean they are underpaid. Technology is showing the public the extreme of it. This makes some people rethink their decision to become a teacher, but not mine. This does not change my mind, it's not about the money but about the dream. I had great teachers growing up and it is my dream to become just like them!

"More often then not, teachers in colonial America received no formal preparation at all. Most elementary teachers never attended a secondary school," (page 11). This quote I found very interesting! I was shocked to read this because I didn't know this. I can't imagine going into teaching with minimal training. Being thrown into teaching kids, they are here to learn, they don't know your situation. Going into something like this would be so stressful for me, and I am grateful I get to keep learning and when I am comfortable is when I can start teaching kids.

"Cultural differences in selecting which students take these exams also affect test score.... In some nations, only a small percentage of the most talented students are selected or encouraged to continue their education...." (page 20). This quote is very shocking! It's awful to think that only a handful of students are encouraged to keep going to school. What about the other guys? where do they go? It isn't fair for others who aren't what people call "gifted". This makes me want to become a teacher very badly. I want to be a change for others, get everyone involved and meeting their goals and furthering their education. No one likes to be left out and I want to help figure this out.

"Gardner identified eight kinds of intelligence, not all of which are commonly recognized in school setting. Gardner believes that his theory of multiple intelligences more accurately captures the diverse nature of human capability, (page 27). I love this quote. I agree one hundred percent with it, there is no one intelligence factor, but many. Gardner helps every kid believe they are smart. School is all about logic. Not every kids is good at thinking logistically but can the same answer using a different method, which is shown by Gardner. I believe everyone is smart in their own way, unfortunately school is closed minded. They like to stick one thing only, making some kids struggle and not like school. This also makes me want to be a teacher even more then I already did. I want to be the light in my kids' lives and show them that they are very smart. No two kids are the same, and neither is their thinking.

"Being creative is a timeless skill, A creative mind discovers new ways of looking at the world, and offers new insights and a fresh way of thinking," (page 20). This quote talks about how creativity is vital in the world. It's our alternate ways of looking at things is what made huge discoveries in our time. Teachers want to promote creative thinking, getting children to think outside the box and find the answer from many different entry points. Not all kids will look at a problem the same way, neither do adults. It's exciting to see what others will come up with when they can be creative and use the tools they have. This is what I want to do. I want to my children to teach me different methods to solve a problem, you can learn a lot of the minds that are pure and full of light.

"Importantly, our understanding of how nature and nurture influence gender roles is changing," (page 36). This quote along with its paragraph I feel is important. Gender role s are huge! everyone has heard of them. they say how girls are suppose to be in dresses and doing their makeup while boys get the good grades in science and are superstars on the field. This has proven over and over how this isn't true, some girls love sports and guys are into fashion. And there is nothing wrong with this but some people think it should be set in stone. They think we cant change our brain, it's fixed. This has to with another big topic of nature vs. nurture. Our biology makeup is of course very important. It makes up who u are and gender. But people on the outside have an impact on you too. This is big for teachers, we want to be open to everyone. Be understanding of where they come from and where they are now. Everything can have an impact on us and educators want to be a positive force, helping kids realize they can be and do whatever their heart desires.

"Perhaps she was falling into a common pattern: noticing misbehavior among black students but "not seeing" the same misbehavior among white students," (page 53). This is a powerful quote, and unfortunately very common. It happens with all cultures. The adults in one culture tend to point out only the bad stuff about another group and then stereotype them as this. It happens more between blacks and whites, and that's not right. Whites have always found themselves superior since the dawn of time. Unfortunately, that hasn't changed. I don't think everyone realize they're doing it! We need to stop focusing on the bad with the Blacks but also the good. And start yelling at the Whites for misbehavior too. This is unacceptable for teachers to do. It makes me upset that this is still an issue! We have to be more evolved then we were the last century.

"In fact, that example provides us with a fairly concise definition of bilingual education, the use of two languages for instruction," (page 59). This is also a very important quote. America is proud to say that we have so many people form all over the world here! They bring over their new ideas, food, work qualifications, and most importantly their language. There are so many languages here in America but not everyone knows them, and we expect those who come here to learn English. We don't try to learn their language and that's not fair. They try really hard to fit in with our standards and when they don't we kick them out. I am very fortunate to have been able to learn Spanish in middle school and high school, and I took an ASL class at ECC. I know that's just the basic languages to learn here, it's nothing like Chinese or Swedish. However, as a future teacher, I am willing to learn so I can make connections with all the students I will have.

I think this is pretty important for kids to know. They are going to be sitting next to someone from a different background then them and they should have some background information about them. This is something I think all classrooms should take into account. They should take time on the first day and have the children get to know each other, learn where they are from, what they like to eat, etc. It will be great for them. They will make new friends and learn some facts about other cultures and I will be great!

"As gamekeepers, teachers must determine who will talk, when, and for how long, as well as the basic direction of the communication," (page 86). I have known teachers who were like this. they made students raise their hands before talking, they have dictated where the conversation should go, and by doing this made the class very boring. Students hated going to these types of classes because they didn't really get a say in it. This method is very destructive for the classroom. Students don't get to engage in their work and therefore usually sit in silence. Teachers should be lenient with discussions and the way they run their classrooms. Letting the kids decide where the conversation goes and being able to say what they want opens the door for some debate and discussion. Students will learn to back up their views and also get a new perspective on topics. This will engage the students, getting everyone participating. They just need the freedom and courage to do so. This idea has told me to do this in my classroom. Yes, I will have the basic rules of not talking over one another, ect., but I know this will work and get kids ready to learn, open their minds.

Boys cant take music class without being called a fag," (page 93). This is talking about kids in middle school. These years are what people call the "worst years of your life." It's where everything starts changing and kids just turn mean and judgmental. Girls feel like they shouldn't be smart or they wont be liked. They believe they have to play dumb to get the guy, but it's not true! I am not sure how this started but it has been going on for a while but I needs to stop. It is showing young girls that to be loved they have to be bad at school. The smart ones are "nerds'" and "geeks". This is defacing the female gender. We should be encouraging others to reach our goals, don't stop until we get their. Same with boys. its been said how boys cant take a music class or join gymnastics because they are "girlie." We have put labels on things, making them one gender specific but that's not fair! Some guys love music and some girls are passionate about sports. For some reason in middle school, no one sees it like this. There is only one way to be cool and that's to follow these rules. Teachers I have seen want to help but they just don't know how. Teachers need to understand what the situation is, see where it is coming from, and then explain how and why it is wrong.

"More then half of American families are remarried or recoupled,... Other families are created through same-sex, cross-cultural and racial unisons," (page 98). This very important in this day in age. There are so many single parents, same-sex parents, and parents from different social backgrounds. These all have different effects on children. Sometimes the kid who is always acting out in class comes from an abusive household, or a single parent household who wasn't taught right from wrong. This is very important to know as teachers. Your students will have all come from different backgrounds and you never know how this might effect them. You should be able to sympathize and let them know you are there for them. Teachers shouldn't become their parents, but at least some sort of adult figure they can trust and go to. Kids can be very mean to those with two moms or dads. Teachers will have to be able to extinguish the problem and let them see the bright side of having two moms or two dads. I feel like as a future teacher I could do this. I grew up with divorced parents and having a step-dad in the family. I feel like I am up for the challenge to make everyone feel welcome.

"As women came to dominate teaching, the gender tables were turned, and a new concern arose: the fear that female teachers were 'feminizing' boys," (page 122). I feel like this is insane! I have not seen where this is happening, boys aren't changing their behavior because of a female teacher. I am not sure where people are getting this idea but it's crazy. Females are known for being the caring ones and being there for others, and I feel like this is the best way to teach. Kids succeed when someone is there who is caring for them and helping them strive toward their goals. But with this being said, I feel like more males should go into teaching. They will bring something new to the table, and maybe help with this issue people are having with their sons and female teachers. I feel like guys can help balance out our teaching skills and how we teach topics. They will have a new and maybe more effective and fun way to learning and I feel like children will benefit from this, we just need more guys to be interested in teaching ;). For me being a girl, I am still gonna give it all I got, get my kids to succeed and hopefully do it in a fun and engaging way!

"As early as kindergarten, many Hispanic students are less able than their whites peers to identify colors, letters, count to fifty, or write their name. More than half Hispanics drop out of school," (page 132). This is unbelievable! The drop out rates should not be so high, this is so devastating. As a teacher, it is your job to teach all your students fairly. Some teachers struggle with this because not every kid is at the same academic level, and that's natural. Unfortunately, most give up with these students, say they are hopeless, and that leads to these students to drop out. Instead of getting frustrated and giving up on your students, get them the help they need. I know it is hard when you have 20+ students to take care of, but this should make you want to seek some help. Ask others who have more experience or ask the special education teachers for advice. Teachers should want all their students to have the opportunity to learn everything they can, but if they are behind, it will only get worse for them. Seek out some support for these kids so you can keep focus on your other students. Half the Mexican American students drop out, we as teachers should work to lower this percentage one by one until the rate is zero. This goes for every student rate, getting the drop out rate to decrease little by little. Together we can do that.

"With constant transitions, children’s learning suffered," (133). This is a short quote but it has a big effect on teachers. The paragraph was talking about Mexicans moving to America and how they migrate once or twice a year and this does have an effect on students. With all the different transitions kids take, the harder it is to learn because they constantly worrying about making new friends, and how different their teachers are going to be from their previous school. Teachers need to recognize this as soon as possible because the sooner they do, the more help you can give them! Most teachers blame the students for the lack of work they do but it's not always their fault. They feel uneasy due to all the times they move, school isn't the first thing in their mind. Future teachers should look into this and do their best to help these students feel safe, smart, and ready to learn.

I like this quote but there aren't many teachers who follow this path in teaching. Teachers are there to teach us math and where we came from but not teaching us how to be better people. I feel like this is just as important as the Pythagorean Theorem they drilled into our heads. Where would we be if we never learned to care for each other and protect each other? This society has become more focused on our test scores and competing for the highest scores then teaching us to be kind to others. We have a set curriculum that we have to teach and we can still follow it, but just add in the how important it is to look out for each other and care for the planet

If you are brilliant in math, history, and English, you are smart. If you aren't as good in the STEM courses but great at music or art, it doesn't matter. Schools and colleges only look for the math and English grades. This goes along with the Multiple Intelligence theory which i most gratefully agree with. It tells us that we are all smart in our own ways. Unfortunately, others don't see it like this. One day though, people good at music will be considered just as smart as the kid good at reading and writing.

" In a constructivist classroom, students and teachers constantly challenge their own assumptions, (page 169). This quote is talking about how the stuff we know today will be ancient history in a few years. Things are always changing, so everyone has to regroup and teach something they didn't know at one point. This makes it very hard for students to keep up in school. Things are changing and teachers have to find new ways to deliver the material that they also just learned. To sum it up, parents can't really help their kids in math because the theories have changed when they learned it, and the teachers want everything written in a certain way and that is hard for parents. This also goes along with why a lot of teachers would like control of their curriculum. If they got to distribute the information in their own way, it might make things easier for kids. If they get the concept but can't really explain it, that should be enough

It is no secret that some schools have a lot more school funding then others. Parents are sending their kids to these school with more money because they are said to be the best, but why do schools have to be better than others? Well this group tried to help out the poorer districts by taking some funds from the wealthy and distributed them to the poor. I like this idea because it's not fair schools are treated differently, the districts with less funds get a bad rap from everyone. Just because they have less money doesn't mean they are bad schools. They just learn a valuable lesson of to use what they have and make the most out of it. They have more heart then the wealthy schools who use technology to bring in parents.

"Wealthier schools attract better prepared teachers and create smaller classes. Poorer schools cannot afford this," (page 188). This is true pretty much everywhere in the world , it is just the way it goes. In Illinois, one wealthy district spends about $20,000 more per student than a poor district in the state! This is a crazy amount of money but it doesn't work out much in the end. Researchers have found that "well-spent funds can reduce the achievement gap, adequate education does not even attempt to equalize spending." This can help shine some light on the idea that just because the school has a lot of money, doesn't mean they are the best school. Schools like to show off their funds and hide their academic scores. One thing the future teachers can do is not get caught up in the huge pile of funds, and work on using it to effectively teach their students. That's what school is suppose to be about. They should use just enough technology to get the main idea of the subjects across and work on getting their kids engaged and excited in learning.

"Advertisers intentionally market older products to younger children, (page 193). We see kids being advertised in commercials everyday. This gets kids more likely to buy what they are selling, they are the target for 20 billion advertising dollars annually! Decades of commercializing childhood as been effecting our economy. Today, children have spent a trillion consumer dollars annually. To get to the reason I picked this quote, kids look up to the older kids they see, they want to dress like them and act like them so advertisers went into action. They have been selling "sexy adolescent clothes" to little girls. This generation we see young girls wearing the crop tops and make up, they want to be like what they see on TV like High School Musical and Hannah Montana. Not just teachers but everyone needs to do a better job at showing girls that they don't need the weight-reducing products and show they are beautiful just the way they are. If we don't, the producers will win this fight, showing girls, and guys, they need to spend their allowances on these products they don't need.

"For women these were critical factors in being offered a job and the 'right' answer was: 'No, I am not going to get married or have children,'" (page 214). Gender roles and inequalities have been an issue for way to long. Marital and parenthood status seems very important when hiring females but none of that matters when hiring a male. Now, the federal and state have made it illegal to ask such questions during an interview but it's sad that this had to be brought up. This has had it's toll on the teaching profession in many ways, one of them being that most of the teachers are female, and a lot of them want to get married and have kids someday, but they were not hired if they had such desires. This has dropped the rate of individuals going into this occupation, motivating those to change the rules and standards they have. If this was still a rule, it probably would have effected my decision to want to become a teacher. Luckily now no one has to answer these questions and get rejected. Females can apply for teaching jobs and having the opportunity to start a family if they desired to have one.

"Every student has the right to learn in a school that is safe and equitable," (page 224). This seems very reasonable, keeping the students safe and cared for. There can be, however, some debate about the rules. Everyone has the right to learn unless you are being disruptive and not following the rules. The zero-tolerance policy explains how their right to learn can be taken away if they are not listening by the use of detention, suspension, or expulsion. This policy dates back to 1994 when congress said the school can punish children for brining guns on school property. Some students will try to fight back on their right to freedom of speech, but they need to understand that there is a line between what is appropriate to say or do and when it is appropriate do say this. As a teacher, we should describe very clearly where that line is and what it includes. They have to watch what they say, do, and wear at certain times, but some kids think they are smarter then the rules. Here is where schools run into trouble. We as the adults in the situation should make sure we are handling in the right manner, give children the rules again, why it is in place, give them a warning and then if the behavior continues is when the punishments come into play.

"Educators wrestle everyday with the challenge of helping students be and feel safe in schools," (page 231). What this quote means to me is how among all the leaning that takes place in classrooms, the most important thing is making sure students are safe. However, this is something most teachers over look. Some like to just give tests and have an authoritarian teaching style. This will stress out the kids and have them dread going to class, and this has effected the suicide rate! The rate of suicide and drop outs have increased because of stress students feel in school. Future educators should keep this in mind when going into this field. We also have the nonwritten rule that we have the responsibility to prevent and respond to bullying, discrimination, and harassment. We see bullying all over the school and this doesn't help the stressful environment some students are in. We are kind of the parents when the real parents aren't around. We are here to teach as well as worry about our kid's health and safety. As much as learning, studying, and homework, is important in student's education, we have to make sure the kids feel like school is a safe haven. There's an easier way in getting information across in a stress free way.

There is a whole list of school goals that different groups favor. This one is my favorite! Instead of teaching JUST the different types of mathematics and our history, but also how to be good neighbors. Sometimes we as students get very competitive with each other to see who got the highest test score or who is overall the smartest in the class, we forget to support each other. We should be congratulating the small accomplishes in life instead on who did it first and better. All the time students get reprimanded about boasting, or stealing and fighting, but they aren't told WHY it's wrong. This quote is my favorite because it tells us how unloyal we can be and how we should all work to change this, we may come from different backgrounds but we all have the same end goal so wee should work with each other so we can all get there.

"The state moved to open enrollment, which allows parents to send their students to any Minnesota public school with available space," (page 256). Open enrollment has some positives outcomes, as well some negative. This allows parents to send their kids to any school they want. This is good because it makes it more likely that every kid will get an education and they can be with their friends. Also, this lets parents decide where their kids go. If they want their children to go to the highest rating school on the state tests, they can. If they want their kids to go to the school with the best music or art program, that's an option. However, this creates conflict between schools and parents. Once the schools available seating is full, parents cannot enroll there. This will spark up conflict, as well as the idea of how many kids are in one school. The homeostasis is going to be off when one school in the state is completely full while another school has twenty students. I don't have a personal vendetta with open enrollment, we just have to be mindful of where the students seem to be migrating to and how to maintain homeostasis.

I definitely agree with this quote! Those who are homeschooled haven't been introduced to others who come from different cultures and ethnicities. These select students don't know how to react and communicate with others because this is all new to them. I don't think homeschooling is a bad thing, though. Some people just cannot afford sending their kids off to school so this is their only way to educate their children.

"Much of what is taught in schools is tradition and conventional wisdom, representing curricular inertia rather than careful thought," (page 277). What comes to mind when I read this quote was how school hasn't changed at all. We are stuck in a rut with traditions and we don't know any other way. I do agree with this quote, I feel that schools have a one-track mind. They keep doing the same thing, teaching the same material the exact same way that now it's over used. Kids now aren't the same as kids back then. Our minds work a little differently so we need a method of being taught the material. Teacher's now need to think of different ideas that are engaging and still fit the curriculum. Other wise, we aren't going to learn anything and schools will blame it on us. As a future teacher, I am going to think long and hard on how to change these out-of-date materials and make learning fun again.

"High school seniors involved in school activities and less likely to cut class, three times as likely to have GPA of 3.0 or higher, and more likely to attend college when compared to students not involved in school activities," (page 280). I like this quote a lot because I agree with it on a personal level. I joined some sports teams in high school and after I started my grades got better. I feel like kids need a place de-stress and have fun with their friends and not compete about test scores. A way to get the blood flowing and brain stimulated to digest the material they just learned makes it easier to retain the information. When I'm a teacher, I will encourage my students to join a sports team or club. I want them to see how beneficial it can be.

"A standardized test requires all test takers to answer the same questions, so that student and teacher performance can be compared," (page 289). This is great and all, I remember taking these tests and how they did NOT work. You can't compare students against each other because we all have different strengths in different areas. This make kids who can't get the concept on basic instruction feel dumb because that is what the test says. Teachers have no other way to get clarity on where they stand against other students their age, but this method isn't working. As teachers, we have to teach to all our students and there should be a way to change the test a bit to fit everyone's talents.

"When there is more engaged time within allocated time, student achievement increases," (page 310). I am sure everyone can think of at least one teacher who needs to take a look at this quote. Teachers who are not engaging or interesting are the classes most likely for students to act out in. They are bored and they're not learning. Now think of that one teacher who was your favorite. How fun the lessons were and how much you looked forward to their class. These students probably did their best work in this class; probably got hundreds on tests just from being in an interactive class. This is what teachers should be doing, coming up with ways to make the standards a little less boring. This is what I want to do. I am going to make my students excited and ready to learn.

"Questioning is key in guiding learning, and all students should have equal access to classroom questions and academic interaction," (page 317). Reading this quote made me think of some of the teachers I had in school. They would call on those without them raising their hands and skip over those who do have their hands up. I do understand that they want to hear from those who haven't said anything yet but a lot of the time they don't know the answer and calling on them just makes them feel stupid when they say "I don't know." Also, I have seen teachers call on the same students when other kids have their hands up. Teachers should let everyone have a chance to speak, IF their hand is raised, or if they look like they might know the answer.

"Differentiated instruction organizes instructional activities around student needs rather than content," (page 334). This is an awesome quote, this shows what an effective teacher does. It takes the curriculum that is needed to be studied but puts a twist on it so everyone is engaged and learning. This instruction takes in the needs of the students and teaches into it. This allows kids to ask their questions and get a little off the standard so they can fully understand the lesson. Each teacher should take this into account when figuring out what works and what doesn't. Not everyone learns the same way, might take a little more digging around to find the breaking point. This is one of the best instructions and should be allowed in classrooms.
