Information Literacy is the ability to "identify, find, evaluate, and use information effectively" (Common Sense Education .pdf file). It is the ability that a student must have in order to sift through, find, and utilize the vast amounts of information that he/she is faced with.

In today's world there is so much information available that it is imperative that students learn how to focus in and use useful information. Without these skills, students may obtain too much information, obsolete information, untrue information, or just not useful information. According to the Common Sense Education paper, students must learn how to: 1. evaluate the quality and credibility of websites.
2. Think critically about the intentions of commercial websites and advertising.
3. Apply strategies to increase the accuracy and relevance of searches.
*Common Sense Education article.

As a librarian, I have been teaching the Big6 and the Super3 concepts for a lot of years. However, as Mike Eisenberg stated in the vodcast, I too have sometimes had a difficult time getting it to "fit" into the time restraints of an elementary library period. It seems like through the years as I have attempted projects using both of these models, I would get frustrated with the lack of time I had to accomplish them. It would seem that I would teach a short lesson on the topic, give students their assignment, pass out the needed materials, and then shortly after I would look at the clock and realize we needed to clean up so the students would have time to check out books. I really like Dr. Eisenberg's idea to use the terminology in everything we do. In that way, I can constantly be teaching The Big6 and Super3 even though we may not be able to go through the entire process in the short library period time. The other thing I picked out from the podcast was to collaborate with the teachers so that I can introduce the model, but the students can go through the process in their own classroom.
*Mike Eisenberg Vodcast
