While going through the trashed items in her home, she finds a clue on Jack's cell phone that will help lead to the murder. Eventually Shauna, Zach, and Everett find Marilyn and Alex at the cabin. They happen to catch the murderer with his mask off so they were able to recognize him as their old friend Karl. He was confessing to Marilyn that he wanted Shauna's necklace to sell to the Chinese for a fortune. With that money he wanted to fly away with Penelope (the girl who he was dating while still married) and leave his family behind to start a new life. He is arrested. Her husband, Jack, dies in a climbing incident while with his friend Zach. She has a son named Alex who is young and curious. At first, Shauna blames Zach for Jacks death since he always pushed Jack to do dangerous things. Later on Shauna falls for Zach.

Zach: Zach was Jack's best friend. He always liked Shauna but once  Jack was gone, it was his job to protect Shauna and Alex. 

Marilyn: Marilyn is Jack's mom. She blames Zach for her son's death since he was the only one with him when the incident happened. She also believes that Zach pushed Jack too much. At first, Marilyn doesn't accept Shauna's and Zach's relationship but does eventually.

Luis: Luis is Shauna's dad. After his wife and other children died in an earthquake, he gave up on life and became an alcoholic. He and Shauna were never very close since he shut her out.

Zach persuades Jack to go on a dangerous climbing adventure with him. Jack dies due to falling rocks causing him to fall to his death. Shauna and Marilyn blame Zach for Jack's death because they think Zach pushed Jack too much.

Conflict #2 (Person vs. Society : Other mysterious deaths occur. Shauna's other friends (Clarence, Lucy, and Darla) are murdered mysteriously. Eventually Shauna puts all the clues together, with the help of Zach and the police, and they find out all these deaths were linked, including Jack's. Jack's death is a murder instead of an accident.

Conflict #3 (Person vs. Person) : Alex and Marilyn get kidnapped by the murderer. He holds them captive at Marilyn's old cabin. Shauna, Zach, Luis, and Everett, have to give the murderer the necklace that Shauna's mom gave her when she passed away. Those who like mystery and suspense would really enjoy this book. I would give it 4/5 stars.
