In response, the girls joined their mother in distributing anti-Nazi newspapers and pamphlets to show their resistance. Around that time the Oversteegen family helped shelter a  Jewish refuges from Germany. This caught the attention of Frans van der Wiel, the commander of the Haarlem Council of Resistance. The girls joined the Council of Resistance with their mother's approval, bringing them into a concerted effort. During their time in the Resistance, Truus and Freddie would be working with a woman named Hannie Schaft.
The trio would organize shootings from their bikes; luring German soldiers to a secluded forest where they would be shot and executed by the girls. The girls would sabotage bridges and railroad lines.
They would help shelter jewish refuges and anyone who was being hunted by the nazis.

Freddie Oversteegen experienced a series of heart attacks towards the end of her life. She died on 5 September 2018 in a nursing home in Driehuis, one day before her ninety-third birthday.
