STEM FARM PROJECT-A Campaign to embrace modern farming

To meet the projected calorie needs of the global population by 2050, 593 million hectares of land will need to be converted into agricultural land.

This required land area is roughly twice the size of India. This outlook puts many vital ecosystems at risk of extinction, particularly those critical to maintaining the balance of carbon dioxide in our atmosphere.

We can’t keep producing more food in the same way as we have been doing before—we need to re-imagined the way farming is done by reducing food’s environmental impact.

Agriculture contributes nearly one-quarter of global greenhouse gas emissions, uses 37 percent of landmass (excluding Antarctica), and accounts for 70 percent of all freshwater withdrawn from rivers, lakes, and aquifers.

As a result of this sad realities, we student members of Young Entrepreneurs Club in Caleb British International school, Lekki have launched a project a farm called STEM Farm.

STEM Farm is a Hydroponic farm where all the plant are planted with only water and substrates and without soil.

The farm contains 100 heads of different plants standing on 2.4 square meters of land space.
By 6th of October 2021 the farm will be exactly 3 months and by then we would have used up 2,520L of water for irrigation.

With this project idea, we are helping in preserving critical elements of our ecosystem; water and plant life's in rain forest.

We have embarked on advocacy for Youths like us to embrace this system of farming because it is easy, simple and innovative.

Our Advocacy is for people to: 'Plant what you eat and eat what you plant.'

Apart from advocacy, we are already harvesting our fruits from the farm and making sales.

Expected outcomes: The outcome of STEM Farm project is to encourage youths to embrace Agriculture. Post harvest wastage will be reduced drastically as food production has been brought closed to the people hence nutrition is preserved from the farm to fork. Land degradation due to tilling for Agriculture is reduced to minimum. Moreso, volume of water usage is well calculated and managed. We students also build necessary Entrepreneurship skill which will help us in managing our future endeavors.

JOIN US ON THE CAMPAIGN TO SAVE OUR PLANET AS WE ENGAGE IN RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION.

I am a member of my school's young entrepreneurs club, and we have been working on a project called stem farm for the past three months. and what I've realized is that innovations can make things easier. Agriculture in school was thought to be time consuming and full of risks and challenges, filled with pests and diseases and unforeseen climate effects, and going outside of the classroom to practice agriculture was the other way around. This agriculture system is the polar opposite, hydroponic system farming is a farming system in which you use growth free medium to grow soil, which we made use of substrates as a replacement for soil, this system is very simple and produces fresh, nutrient-dense, and organic food to eat.

It includes several United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including SDGs 13, 14, and 17. We worked as a team to make this a reality. One thing I learned during this project is that collaboration is essential for success. There is always an easier way to do things; you just have to be open minded and willing to learn.

My name is Christine Iheanacho, a member of the Young Entrepreneurs Club. We have been working on a project for the past three months called the STEM FARM PROJECT.

This agriculture system is known as hydroponic farming.

Hydroponics is a type of horticulture that involves growing plants without soil, by using mineral nutrient solutions in an aqueous solvent. The basic concept of a hydroponic farm is that water is substituted for soil. Solutions are then added to the water to provide easily accessed nutrients for a healthy yield. The nutrients added to the water may include phosphorus, nitrogen, calcium, potassium, and many more, depending on the plants being grown

Why Hydroponic Farming?

Farmers can have total control over a hydroponic system. They are able to manage pH and nutrients to make sure plants are getting the exact nutrients they need.

You can grow anywhere.

Uses 20 times less water than soil-based gardening; It may seem counterintuitive, but growing plants in water actually use less water than growing the same plants in soil. In fact, hydroponic plants can grow with up to 98 percent less water than traditional growing methods.

Your environment is sterile, which means no pesticides.

You'll use 20% less space for growing.

The system water can be reused, allowing you to conserve water.

No chemical weed or pest control products are needed when operating a hydroponic system

Produces higher yields: Creating ideal conditions ensures plants receive the perfect amount of nutrients, which come in direct contact with roots.

Require Less Labor: Without the need for tilling, weeding, herbicide and insecticide application, and other labor-intensive farm jobs, hydroponics offers a lighter load for laborers and can easily be managed with far fewer man-hours. This both cuts back on the cost of producing crops, and frees up time for other pursuits.

Our Advocacy is for people to: 'Plant what you eat and eat what you plant.'

One thing I learnt during this project is that there is always another solution to a particular problem, you just have to be open-minded to find it and to us, STEM FARM is the solution to preserving critical elements of our ecosystem; water and plant life's in the rain forest.

It alleviates farmers' stress by making agriculture more professional and goal-oriented, altering the perception of agriculture as a busy, stressful, and filthy work.
The most important lesson I learned was that teamwork is vital for making large ambitions a reality. Because of this club I have unlocked so many potentials and I am able to say that I have some great achievements, from developing apps, hydroponic farming, participating and wining some of the competitions, business seminars and many more, helping us to brainstorm to solve the problems currently faced by the society, nation and world wide. This has shown me my capabilities and that I have no limits, This is an experience to remember and I'm forever grateful. I will admit it can be exhausting some times but the end is always worth it , I believe as we keep growing in this club we will be able to solve a wider range of problems and also carry out more attributes and thinking like an entrepreneur .

THE FUTURE OF AGRICULTURE
