#line hops vs straight lines

I'm seeing confusion among students as they transition from elementary to middle school with hops on a #line to straight lines. Teachers are teaching it the way it's tested at their own grade level, but it would be helpful for it to be consistent. Is there a reason for the change? It also impacts how division is modeled when moving towards integers. Thank you!
