He didn't feel emotion for what he did and continuously tries to convince both himself and the audience that he is not insane. A person who is sane wouldn't feel the need to prove his sanity. "I then smiled gaily, to find the deed so far done." This shows his insanity, because if a sane person who had just killed somebody wouldn't have been smiling or even happy about it. On top of that, his emotions change very quickly from horror to excitement and happiness to guilt.
