The textbook generally portrays indiginous poeple as mainly passive in the process of white colonization in America. It also takes blame away from the government- for example, it says that the government couldn't have done anything to stop westward expansion by white people, even though the government was often actively involved with promoting this expansion.

The attempt to condemn both sides causes the textbook to not go in depth on the atrocities that were often committed, especially the lack of mention of the genocide in California.

The textbook just describes it as the Native Americans were pressured out of the way of colonizers. The colonizers attacked and murdered anyone who was in their way, this was not murder, this was genocide.

Like how different tribes have been receiving plots of land to "repay" them for the actions of the colonizers. I think they could have addressed the liability of the colonizers and talked about more solutions that would resonate more with the natives.

The textbook made a point about trying to remain unbiased, but still presented information through the eyes of the white Americans. During Thomas Jefferson's presidency, he proposed a solution to the so-called "Indian Problem" in the West but the texbook portrayed the solution in kind of a benign sort of wording, saying how they could become assimilated into white culture or migrate west. The way the two options were presented seemed like it wasn't violent or forceful and only later it adressed the true nature of the act in a single sentence. Elizabeth Kennedy

I wish the textbook took Indigenous voices into account a lot more. The fact that the textbook is really only focusing on the views and voices of Europeans, I think its vital to incorporate their own perspectives into history instead of simply saying something like "oh the Native Americans attacked white settlers so they had to be civilized". I also think that more modernized Native history should be added to the textbook because the fact that there isn't any information on it in modern-day is really harmful for younger students who might just think that all Indigenous people died out after the settlers came.
