"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is an 1820 short story by American author Washington Irving. First published in a book of short stories and essays entitled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent, it is one of the first enduring works of American fiction. Focusing on the legends of a Headless Horseman in an early American village in New York, as well as on the conflict between two very different and flawed men with their eyes on the same woman, many of its themes and characters have become iconic parts of American lore. Exploring themes of romantic rivalry, the supernatural, and the details of American post-colonial life, it is still consistently taught in schools today and has remained in print ever since its original publication. It has been adapted multiple times for other mediums, although many adaptations only keep the bare bones of the story as a framework for supernatural horror. Its most famous adaptations are the faithful Disney cartoon packaged as one half of “The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad”, and a Tim Burton/Johnny Depp horror movie and a FOX TV series, both titled “Sleepy Hollow”.(Citation 3)
