Build a happier and healthier parent-child relationship by building on your strengths and learning new skill

How does it work?

A trained professional will take a short video (around 10 minutes) of you and your child interacting or doing something your child enjoys. The video can be taken at home, a family hub, or another agreed upon location.

They will meet with you again (for 30– 45 minutes) and show you the positive interactions they have captured, helping you recognise your strengths and discover new skills. This can include:

• You developing the ability to understand your child's cues

• You increasing your sensitivity towards your child's needs

• You being able to support your child’s emotional wellbeing

This process will be repeated 3 to 4 times

VIG has a strong evidence base and is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to promote secure attachment (the bond where a child feels safe, supported, and connected to an adult).

We have limited spaces available on our mentoring programme as we depend on volunteer mentor availability. Please contact your local XLP Mentoring Manager to discuss the referral before completing the form so we can ensure we have space on the programme.

After accepting a referral, we'll arrange an assessment meeting with the parent/carer and young person. This helps ensure suitability and commitment. We'll then match them with a suitable mentor. There is no set timescale for this process and we ask that referrers are patient with us as we look to make the best possible mentoring match.

​Please note that we are not set up to work with young people who, due to their high risk needs or the requirement of specialised help, would not be safe in a 1-2-1 environment with a volunteer mentor.

Providing weekly counselling, art and play therapy, sessions, 1-2-1, face to face or online, Growing Minds is aimed at 11-25 year old’s, who present with mild-moderate mental health difficulties, live in City and Hackney and are registered with a Hackney GP. The service is free of charge.

Sessions are delivered by therapists of African and Caribbean Heritages in a number of locations in Hackney, including the Textile Building, Forest Road HealtSpot and schools.

The study is based at the Tavistock & Portman and at King’s College London, and we are running a trial of new interventions for parents of children with behaviour problems.

These interventions are designed specifically for parents who have been offered group parent training, but not found it helpful for their child’s problems.

You might either have tried a group and dropped out, or simply felt that a group was not the right place to address your child’s particular problems. 

Parents have said that what they really need is a more personal approach, one-to-one with an expert on children’s problems over a number of weeks, and that is what we are offering.

Our interventions are not designed for children who have autism (or suspected autism) or a significant learning disability.

The study is based at the Tavistock & Portman and at King’s College London, and we are running a trial of new interventions for parents of children with behaviour problems.

These interventions are designed specifically for parents who have been offered group parent training, but not found it helpful for their child’s problems.

You might either have tried a group and dropped out, or simply felt that a group was not the right place to address your child’s particular problems. 

Parents have said that what they really need is a more personal approach, one-to-one with an expert on children’s problems over a number of weeks, and that is what we are offering.

Our interventions are not designed for children who have autism (or suspected autism) or a significant learning disability.

If, despite getting help, the pupil does not make progress and parents have given their permission, the setting can ask an Educational Psychologist (EP) to suggest ways of helping.

The EP may then:

• work with key members of staff in the school or setting

• observe a child or young person

• work with a child or young person individually

They may also contact other professionals who know the child or young person well.

The service also offers free bookable Educational Psychology Parent Advice Sessions independently of it's work in schools.

The Wellbeing and Education Safeguarding Team are offering short courses for children who are finding it difficult to attend school due to anxiety, low mood or other mental health needs resulting in a presentation of Emotional Based School Non Attendance. These courses will run for 5 or 6 weeks during the Summer Term, and are for groups of up to 8 children. The groups are an opportunity for children to interact with their peers in a low pressure child-lead learning environment, and should be seen as a supportive step to returning back into education.

Summer Term Courses 22nd April - 24th May

• Music and Emotions Key Stage 3 and 4 - Mondays 12:30 - 14:00 at Linden Family Hub This course will explore music in relation to emotions. Children will compose a piece of music based on an emotion of their choice using a range of techniques and instruments. This course is for all abilities and for anyone with an interest in music.

• Forest School (Upper) Key Stage 2 and 3 - Mondays 14:00 - 16:00 at Linden Family Hub An outdoor course which will be providing learner inspired, hands-on experiences in the natural environment.

• Stop Motion - Key Stage 3 and 4 Fridays 14:00 - 15:00 at Ann Tayler Family Hub (Frampton Park) This course will explore how to film and edit your own stop motion animation using Lego, hand-drawn pictures, arts and crafts items - or anything else that your imagination can conjure up! You don't need any prior experience with filmmaking.

Summer Term Courses 3rd June - 12th July

• Creative Arts Key Stage 3 and 4 Mondays 12:30 - 14:00 at Linden Family Hub This course is for anyone who likes to be creative and experimental! This course will explore a range of art techniques through drawing, painting and sculpture.

• Year 6 Transition Support - Year 6 pupils with low attendance Fridays 13:00 - 14:30 at Ann Tayler Family Hub (Frampton Park) These will be supportive session exploring children’s worries and excitement around moving to Secondary School. Children will learn how to prepare for secondary school, how to manage their worries, and how to self advocate in a new environment.

• Dungeons and Dragons After school club - Key Stage 3 Mondays 15:00 - 16:30 at Linden Family Hub Take part in an imaginary adventure that often involves exploring a castle or dungeon, defeating monsters and discovering treasure. No previous experience needed.

The COURRAGE approach aims to improve the mental health of women experiencing violence, abuse and complex trauma through combining collective narrative therapy with indigenous principles and practices anchored to values, ritual and ceremony. It was developed by Ncazelo Ncube-Milo, a Zimbabwean Psychologist who works in South Africa, known for the Tree of Life Methodology.

This group is an E&B Pilot offering to girls and non-binary young people.

Who is the group for: 14–17-year-old girls and non-binary young people who have experienced sexual violence 

They must be receiving active care coordination and therapy – whilst we aren’t doing processing work, there will be recounting of traumatic experiences so important that they have a containing space outside of the group

If there have been suicide attempts or ongoing self-harm, we need an up to date safety plan.

If there is an ongoing court case or police involvement, please let us know, so we can ensure that we discuss with CCO, YP and families.

We are not able to take RED rag young people

How to share with young people:

We would love to come and talk to young people about COURRAGE, Natalie, Rougi or I would be happy to join part of a session to say hello and talk a bit about the group.

It might help to let them know that COURRAGE is a space for young people who have had similar experiences to come together to connect and share about stories of survival. We will be thinking together about how we get through difficult times and what helps us. There is no expectation that experiences of sexual violence need to be discussed in detail, but there will be space for this if the young person feels comfortable. We will do talking together as well as creating our own COURRAGE journals.

Early help social workers will do a family assessment and develop an Early Help Support Plan.

The early help support plan will usually involve a home visit every fortnight.

Interventions might also include setting routines, creating consistency in the home, building up strategies that family have already learned (e.g., 'Special time' learned in Solihull Parenting group).

The length of time families are open to Early Help is up to 3 months. Early Help wouldn't usually keep them open for longer than 3 months.

From the start of the period of Early Help support, there will be very clear goals (e.g., boundaries in the home, getting mum signed up to a workshop).

What does an Early Help Referral need to include?

Referrals to Early Help should include a list of current interventions, as well as what has already been tried, and what is planned in the immediate future.

The group is open to all young people across the whole service aged between 14 and 18, who experience voices or any other multi-sensory experiences (e.g., seeing things, feeling things etc), regardless of how they may conceptualise those experiences . The experiences do not need to be understood within the framework of psychosis or any other diagnosis, and they do not have to be causing the child distress. 

The ethos behind Hearing Voices Groups is that hearing voices and other multi-sensory experiences are meaningful experiences that can be understood in many ways. Hearing voices are not, in themselves, the core problem or an indication of illness. It is the fear, isolation, stigma, powerless and hopelessness that can cause distress and an interruption to life.

The plan is for the Hearing voices group to be a peer support group, based on a strong ethos of self-help. It is not a psychoeducation or skills-based group in its essence but there will be space for this if the group members indicate that it would be helpful.

Universal Offer

We have an offer that uses our First Steps “drop in” processes and does not require a referral to access. No referrals are required for our universal offer and there is no criteria to attend this part of the service.

It is for parents who are finding parenting and managing their children's behaviour difficult, and need some space to reflect with facilitators and other parents on what might help.

The programme will run for 10 sessions and includes a one week break around half-term. This group is intended for parents and carers who want to know more about sensitive and effective parenting. It aims to promote understanding of children’s behaviour within the context of developmental issues; promote the development of parent/child reciprocity; increase confidence and self-esteem in both parents and children; give parents a strategy for repair when things go wrong; and develop a framework of thinking about parent/child relationships which can be developed into a lifelong skill.

Youth Mentoring service provides individual sessions to support LGBTQ+ young people aged 12-24 with issues and concerns relevant to their lived experiences. This could include a space and opportunity to:

• explore their LGBTQ+ identities

• develop strategies to build and sustain confidence and self-acceptance

• develop coping mechanisms for future coming out, or dealing with anti-LGBTQ+ hate

• gain increased knowledge and information on sexual orientation and gender identities and/ or LGBTQ+ rights.

• gain confidence to attend elop youth groups and events

• Allocated a LGBT+ mentor

Our LGBTQ+ youth mentoring is not therapy or a clinical intervention and should not be used as an alternative should either be needed. Instead, mentoring is more flexible, and an informal space for topics suggested by the young people themselves.  Our mentoring service is free and can be held via phone or online via Microsoft Teams.   Sessions are usually weekly for up to 6 months and last for up to one hour per session.

Youth Groups for LGBTQ+ young people aged 12-18. elop’s youth groups provide a safe, inclusive, and affirmative space to make friends, enjoy activities and share experiences with other LGBTQ+ young people. They run every Tuesday evening in Walthamstow at the following times.

·        12-15s 4.30–6.30pm

·         15-18s 7-9.00pm

Our LGBTQ+ 18-25s Group likewise provides a safe and inclusive space for LGBTQ+ young people aged 18-25 to meet other members of the community, share experiences, take part in fun activities, and talk all things LGBTQ+. They run every 2^ND and 4^TH Monday of the month on Microsoft Teams, from 7-8.30PM.

Counselling: free for under 18s, or low-cost for over 18s. This is talking therapy with a counsellor, and this service currently has a waitlist.

Any young person who has registered is open to our youth activities and events programme. This is free LGBT+ events such as board game cafes, meetups, bowling, films, LGBT+ specific activities

• If self-registration is not suitable you can also register on the young person’s behalf with their consent.

Interventions could include regular sessions to monitor risk, safety planning, and multi-agency meetings to ensure safety.

These are for young people and families who might be affected by severe self harm, suicidal ideation, psychosis, or eating disorder that is posing a physical risk.

In October 2022, in Shoreditch Park and the City, the Health & Wellbeing service branched out to support young people aged 12 to 19.  Young Person's Health and Wellbeing Coach Seth Hindley works with GP surgeries, reaching out to local schools, colleges and community projects and working closely with the Shoreditch Trust young people's programme. 

Seth works over 8 sessions to help young people work towards improving their health and wellbeing, using a coaching method, ACT for Young People tools, and motivational interviewing.

The Targeted Health Outreach service is a small team that supports young people with Special Educational Needs and/or disabilities in Hackney. The team works with young people who want to improve their health & wellbeing and develop their independence by offering groups and 1:1 casework support.

Who is THO for:

Our service is targeted at young people with Special Educational Needs and/or disabilities or neurodiversity. We work with people aged 14 – 19 years (up to 25 in our over 18s group), who will not be eligible for adult disability services. You must be registered with a GP in Hackney. We are unable to work with young people who have a care package of more than 5 hours per week from Children’s social care.

Starting on Wednesday 5th November.

Session times: 3.30-5.30pm

The aim of the group is to support young people with low to medium additional needs, to engage in activities that build their confidence and support social interaction and peer relationships. As well as an opportunity to explore activities they may not have had the chance to previously. Sessions will run with an initial 30 min open access and then two 45 min sessions each week giving the opportunity to engage in a sports and a creative session weekly.

Some of the sports on offer will be:

• Badminton, Basketball, Rock climbing yoga and fitness sessions. 

They will also have an opportunity to try things like: 

• Tie Dye and t-shirt printing, comic strips art, bookmark making, lego building as well as other arts and crafts.
