Piecing Me Together by Renee Watson is a fiction novel that explains the struggles of a lower-class, African American girl who goes to a private, predominately white school. The girl's name is Jade and she lives in "the hood" with her mom and uncle, who she calls her cousin since he is so young. Jade's mom works multiple jobs day and night to provide for Jade and EJ, the uncle. When Jade isn't at school, she is creating artwork. Jade joins an organization called Woman To Woman, which helps young African American girls learn life skills and gain a scholarship to any college in Oregon. Jade's talents are seen by her mentor and she gets to sell some art as a fundraiser. This fundraiser brings lots of attention to Jade and her artwork, which she uses to address the race issue in the United States.
I would rate this book 4/5 stars. The 4 stars is because the story is great, it has a great message and makes the audience really think about the race relations in the United States, but it is incomplete. It leaves the reader wondering. If the book explained the ending a little more, it would be an easy 5/5. The book is a good read.

http://www.bloomsbury.com/us/piecing-me-together-9781681191058/ - review for Piecing Me Together
The review for piecing me together was made by BCCB. The review explained that the book helps people discover who they really are and it helps people relate to characters such as Jade. People who can relate to Jade and her situation understand the way she thinks, and it helps them realize that they can discover themselves without being afraid of what others think.
I think that the review on Piecing Me Together is very accurate and it helps the audience find themselves. I think that the review is true in the sense that not everyone can relate to Jade, but at some point in everyone's life, everyone goes through hardships and can relate to the hardships Jade experiences. The book does a great job with showing people how to deal with hardships such as racism.

Element 3: Universal Theme

The universal theme in Piecing Me Together is "Love Wins." Without love for her family, friends, school, the community, and herself, Jade would never have contributed to the community as much as she did. Without her love for art and school, Jade would not have been able to get into Woman to Woman, and not only make a difference in her home life, she would not have been able to make a difference in the community.
The theme is relevant in our world today because of all the chaos going on in today's world. We have multiple scenarios going on in society today. There are great scenarios such as the LGBTQ community getting the rights the deserve, and we have Black Lives Matters protests for the fallen African Americans to police brutality. But there are bad scenarios such as terrorism in our world as well. The one thing that never fails to bring the world together however, is love. Jade brings the community together by having a fundraiser for Natasha Ramsey, a victim of police brutality. "And then Lee Lee grabs my hand and says, "look." With her eyes she points to the door. Mr. and Mrs. Ramsey are here. "We can start now," she says." (Watson 257)

Element 4: Character Analysis

Jade affects the the story's events by using her current situation to drive her and have influence in the community. Jade is a young African American girl who faces racism in her community. Whether it is prejudice from her classmates, or prejudice from people who work at stores, Jade encounters racism and is very familiar with it. When a girl her age named Natasha Ramsey gets brutally attacked by police officers, Jade feels the responsibility to stand up for her and raise money for her hospital expenses.
Jade raises money for Natasha Ramsey by having a art-sale at an art gallery that is professionally arranged by the Woman to Woman organization she is in. Creating collages is a skill of Jade's that she uses to gain attention from many people and eventually, gets lots of money for her work. Jade creates a collage of things that are "Black and Beautiful" and that helped contribute to the cause for Natasha Ramsey.
I can relate to Jade in a way. I have encountered some racism in my life, but i have never seen as much prejudice as some African Americans are seeing in today's world. I can relate to Jade however because i feel for people who are judged for dumb reasons or who receive prejudice from ignorant people. I am a very open-minded person, having most of my friends black, family members that are gay, and constantly being around different cultures and races; so i am very open-minded because all my life i was taught to love people no matter their color or sexuality, because at the end of the day, we are all humans. I relate to Jade for her feeling the need to help others and stand up for others.
