Born on March 12, 1922, novelist Jack Karouac was brought into this world. He grew up in a small cottage like home with his parents and siblings, but at the age of 17, Kerouac packed his bags and moved to New York City, where he was immediately awed by the limitless new experiences of big city life in 1939. The following year he dropped out of college to work odd jobs and begin to figure out his purpose. He returned to NYC and befriended an Allen Ginsberg and William Burroughs and soon the three of them would become leaders of the Beat Generation of writers.

Kerouac didn’t play a major part in the Cold War, but he was in fact known by many people at the time. He, as well as a couple other Beatniks, wrote and published books based on the travels of Kerouac and his friends across the United States. It is considered a defining work of the postwar Beat and Counterculture generations, with its protagonists living life against a backdrop of jazz, poetry, and drug use.
