Because of the lack of treatment for Kari's body after death, there wasn't enough evidence to prove that he murdered her at the time. There was evidence of her laying on the bed with sleeping pills next to her. It was also almost the anniversary of her daughter's death which is why there wasn't any suspicion.

The main witness in this trial was Vanessa Baker and Lina Dulin (Kari Baker's Mother). Vanessa provided all the evidence of what Matt did to Kari and explained everything in full detail. She described how she met Matt by seeing each other during church. She also described all the conversations and meetings she had with Matt that led up to Kari's death. Linda Dulin was the one who wanted to prove that her daughter didn't die of suicide and that Matt was the one who murdered her.

Four years after Kari's death, the case went on trial. During the trial, Matt Baker made an important statement saying, " I truly believe in my innocence. I believe the jury made a mistake." During the trial, the Judge went over the series of events that happened before and after Kari's death. They went over an important part which was Matt's search history on his computer. He said he was searching for an "overdose of sleeping pills". But it was seen that he was trying to purchase Ambien and to buy it you would have to search up "Ambien" or "Ambien without prescription". Matt Baker was asked by Bill Johnston (Linda's attorney) to plead the fifth amendment. He was asked if he was in a relationship with anyone before Kari's death which he replied no. Throughout the trial, Baker was not as talkative as he usually was which led to suspicion. He told attorney Moriarty that everything he said was the truth. On the third day of trial, Linda Dulin came to face with her daughter's murderer. She wanted an explanation on why he had murdered her and he stated, "I didn't kill her." On the last day of the trial, the topic of Kari's death was made. The case was solved by deciphering cryptic messages. Coding is used a lot throughout devices so it was important to have a method to solve cases like this. Technology such as a faraday box is used to store devices to prevent outside signals or any information from being deleted or changed in a device. I think that digital evidence is an invaluable resource because it can help make the process easier when collecting evidence and leading investigators to a possible answer. For instance, a certain email, search history, or transactions can help investigators come up with a better lead than having no information at all. The most valuable part of digital evidence is the information that is stored on the device. Without digital evidence, a lot of well-known cases wouldn't be solved making it easier for criminals to get away with things. As technology advances, it's important to have some things that can be used as a crime to be prevented.
