He was an incredibly important figure in the history of the gay Harlem renaissance. He was born on July 2, 1906 and from a young age he wanted to devote his life to creating art and entertainment. Moving to New York and quickly making connections with other performers in the Harlem Renaissance. Unlike most performers at the time, Richard was very open and honest about his homosexuality. This broke a lot of barriers and challenged many societal norms.
