“To all appearances he had escaped earthly justice.” This is significant because it shows that you can get out of trouble on earth but God always knows what you did. For example Ferdinand would always run away after he killed someone. He may have gotten away but God knew what he did and he got his proper result for his actions.

When we say and doing things, no matter how small, they have an affect on everyone and everything around us.

1 quote: “He knows everything.”
This shows that God knows everything about everyone. This Is significant because it comes up many times in the short story.
2 quote: “You brought dishonor to your home.”
This is important because this shows all of the cruel stuff he did to his family members and other people. He killed nine people, left her sister loney, and made his parents cry to death because they didn't know where he was.
3 quote: “There judges on earth, so there judges here as well.”
This is significant because it shows who the judges are and this also ties into the question, why wasn’t God the judge. That’s because God knows everything, so he couldn’t really punish someone unlike the judges who only know the situation that's happening during the court.

“If the judges knew everything, absolutely everything, they couldn’t judge, either: they would understand everything, and their hearts would ache.” This reveals that, sometimes it is ok not to know everything because sometimes deep down in your heart, you can’t accept the truth. These judges are able listen to the entire story, not knowing the depth of his crimes. Knowing too much reveals to the truth, but blinds your thought process to see other perspectives.

“If judges knew everything, absolutely everything, they couldn’t judge, either: they would understand everything, and their hearts would ache.”

The reason I think this quote is significant is because it proves that people can judge strangers easily for their mistakes or even successes, because they don’t know that person and their story. This goes back to the answers to the questions discussed on the page above. God cannot judge us justly, because He knows everything about us: our mindsets, our reasonings, our entire life. He understands us. This quote reveals that people are the better ones to judge, because since they don’t have the information and insight into a person’s life that God does, they don't have to feel any heartache judging them.

“From anger, from greed, deliberately and by chance, sometimes with pleasure and others times from necessity.”
This quote is important because it suggests the reasons for which Kugler committed his murderous deeds. Perhaps they could be perceived as justifications, or perhaps they increase Kugler’s culpability. Regardless, this quote reflects integrity within the character, as Kugler never objected to the overwhelming wisdom of the witness. Instead, he meekly complied, which unveils an explicit facet of character development.

Brandon Mendoza

“Should I tell you about the good deeds? ‘Thank You,’ the presiding judge said, ‘it isn’t necessary.’”

This quote is significant since it delineates the dangerous one-sided view that humans tend to have when dealing with justice. Notice that this viewpoint has Kugler sentenced to Hell, a place where he is never allowed to come back from, sent to burn and be outcast for the rest of eternity. That doesn’t help Kugler, it only pains him. Thus, when we are to do justice for others on earth, we must redefine justice by not condemning others, but by rather seeing each other as entire beings with purpose and by attempting to educate the individual and unify him/her with the rest of the world.
