Toni Morrison is an extremely successful woman in this country because of her beautifully executed novels that focus on the aspects of being black in America. Because of her great education she received from attending Howard University, she is exceptionally knowledgeable about our history’s past, especially when related to race. This helps as an author and is seen in her writing. Her books shed light on the truth of racism and how it affects black people every single day. Her goal in writing these novels is to represent the entire black community and not allow for society to forget about these powerful people. For example, her successful novel God Help the Child is the story of a young African-American woman who grew up in an abusive household, facing many challenges, the most prominent being her midnight dark skin color, which her own mother is embarrassed by. As we follow this woman’s life, we read the experiences she faces, many affected by her skin color. While this novel is set in modern time, many of her books are set in past time, around the 1830s, thus intertwining of educating the audience on slavery and the relevance it has to our society today is extremely powerful and moving. The main character in her books are always African-American, usually women too, which allows us to follow the journey of a person who is oppressed every single day, learning a lot about the aspects of a black person’s life, no matter the time period. Along with the struggles, we learn about the strength of the character. The main character’s lives are hard and painful, yet they pursue and the underlying presence of power and confidence within the character is just another way Morrison’s flawless writing separates her from other authors.
