“That night I stayed a very long time in the bath. I wanted to know what it felt like to be in a cell filled with water.” (Satrapi 25)

In this quote Marji is pondering the thought of how her grandpa felt while he was in jail. She is learning new things about her grandpa from her dad and the drawings show her to be scared and worried, wondering why the government would do something like this. The drawings show Marji to be mad and she wants to experience this for herself. She wants to know what it feels like to be punished in wrong ways by the government. She knows these punishments were unfair and she wants to know what it felt like for her grandpa. After she learns all this, her mind is changed and she thinks differently of the government now. She thinks the punishments are unfair and thinks they shouldn’t be used. Because of this knowledge, this is the change in her current young life that makes her mindset different towards the government.

“After the death of Neda Baba-Levy, my life took a new turn. In 1984, I was fourteen and a rebel. Nothing scared me anymore.” (Satrapi 143)

Marji is 14 in this quote and she and her thoughts have matured a lot since the beginning of the book. She has become more liberated and thinks more like her parents. This supports my theme because after the change of Baba-Levy in her life, her mindset was drastically changed and she had new outlooks on her life. She wanted to be different and dress differently to rebel against the new government. When Marji says “I was fourteen and a rebel” (Satrapi 143), she shows how she has changed by the use of the word “rebel”. She means that she thinks differently than the government and wants to be her own person.

“Is it e’en so? Then I defy you, stars. Thou knowest my lodging. Get me ink and paper, And hire post horses. I will hence tonight.” (Romeo & Juliet 5.1.25)

This quote shows that Romeo is angry and distraught when he finds out that his lover and wife, Juliet, has died. He is thinking differently of himself and those around him when he says “I defy you, stars” (Romeo & Juliet 5.1.25). He believes that he has done something wrong in “defiance” and this is how his mindset changes. This supports my theme by the sudden change of Juliet’s death and the mindset change is Romeo thinking he has defied everyone.

“O brother Montague, give me thy hand. this is my daughter’s jointure, for no more Can I demand.” (Romeo & Juliet 5.3.300)

In this quote Capulet is talking to Montague after the death of both their children. The children have both died because of the attitude of the two men towards each other. Capulet realizes that Juliet’s death is caused by the two families fighting. This quote supports my theme by showing that Capulet’s mindset is different and changed now because of the death of Juliet which is the big change he experiences. His mindset is different now because of how he now thinks of Montague as a friend instead of an enemy. The same goes for Montague thinking of Capulet as a friend as well. This is proven when Capulet says “Give me they hand '' and “for no more Can I demand” (Romeo & Juliet 5.3.300), as he is showing that he wants to try and be acquaintances with Montague now.
