In chapter one of Gator, we we were introduced to a variety of different species of trees and plants. We could do a plant study with these and learn more about them so that the students have a more concrete idea about the setting of the book. We could also do an animal study on alligators and crocodiles which would end in a compare and contrast of the two creatures. This could help students picture the wildlife more vividly throughout the story.

In chapter 4, we were introduced to a lot of different types of pollution that affect Florida. This chapter could be used to teach the students about pollution and how different human actions affect the environment so drastically. They also talked about the different ways to counteract salt water infiltrating the fresh water and how to fix it, even though it is costly. This could lead to a discussion about whether or not it is a good idea to build houses in certain places in the world such as the swamps of Florida so close to the ocean.

In chapter 5, there is more discussion about the effects of pollution. This information can be used to start a discussion about how to deal with pollution in the school and community. Liza K talks about recycling, which is something that every school can start doing with their students. This book would be a great way to start a discussion about ecological footprints and the effects of humans on the environment.

In chapter 6, we hear even more about pollution. Most of the information was about PCP, a toxin that can poison the animals and make the people that eat the tainted beings very sick. I wonder if the PCP in the book is the same as the drug that is also referred to as Angel Dust? That thought is irrelevant, but it's what I was thinking when I was reading the book. You never know what a student will ask questions about and I figure that would be a conversation to be reckoned with.
The book further discussed salt and fresh water tables and how they fight for space in areas like Florida where the fresh water is ripped from the ground for Condos and hotels, etc.
We also learn about humming birds in this chapter, which could open up a case study or discussion about the creatures.
It would be interesting to have the students write an entry about why one thing can change an entire environment.

In this chapter we learned that PCP was not the pesticide of choice for the farmers and golf course keepers. This could open up a conversation for how many different pesticides there are and which ones are more harmful, more common, etc. Then students can postulate where the PCP came from.
There is also a potential to study animal evidence using footprints, environments, dens, etc. The teacher could bring in casts of animals paw prints and hoof prints, or even teach students how to make casts on their own.
