Phonological and Phonemic awareness involves spoken language. Phonological awareness allows one to recognize spoken language, while phonemic awareness involves manipulating sounds in words. These are all important tools in oral language.

A great application for students is to allow class time for them to communicate using academic language. For example, class presentations encourage students to research a topic and express their findings. Digital storytelling is a great way to promote creativity and use new vocabulary. Class presentations are a great tool in Health Science because they allow students to become proficient in medical oral language.

A great accommodation with medical terms is to make sure students understand prefixes, base words, and suffixes.

I can apply this to my field by aiding students in correctly pronouncing medical terminology. Helping students understand prefixes, root words, and suffixes can help them feel more confident readers of scientific journals.

This is inclusive because it gives all students the opportunity to understand what they are reading and not have to focus on sounding out difficult scientific terms.

Phonics! Children will learn the "alphabetic principle," which states that letter combinations in written language represent the sounds of spoken language.

This is most useful in kindergarten and first grade.

(Active Intervention = Print Awareness )

To help children learn how print works, we must use different literacy methods, such as books, signs, letter games, etc. This will help them understand how written words are organized.

A fluent reader can concentrate on the text. This is vital for young readers to develop reading comprehension. Once the primary focus is not on decoding, then they can focus on what they are reading.

This relates to my discipline because as you become specialized in any field, you will encounter different styles of printed work. In my discipline, a medical chart is a printed work students have never seen. They will have to be taught how to read through and add notes to patient charts.

This is inclusive because at some point we all have to read a medical report. It may be your medical report that you have to decipher after a procedure for example. These are tools everyone can benefit from.

Reading Comprehension

1. Definition

Reading comprehension is the ability to understand, interpret, and analyze a text’s meaning. It involves decoding words, making connections to prior knowledge, drawing inferences, and summarizing key points.

2. Application to the Medical Field

Reading comprehension is essential to accurately interpret patient charts, medical literature, research articles, and treatment protocols. Medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, and dosimetrists, must comprehend complex terminology, follow precise instructions, and critically evaluate new research to provide safe and effective patient care.

3. How It Is Inclusive

Reading comprehension supports inclusivity by ensuring that individuals from diverse backgrounds, varying literacy levels, and different learning styles can access and understand information. In education and healthcare, strategies such as using plain language, providing visual aids, and offering multilingual resources help bridge comprehension gaps.

Developmental reading knowledge is understanding how people learn to read—from decoding words to building vocabulary and comprehension.

In radiation therapy, students must read and understand complex terms and texts. I support them by teaching vocabulary explicitly, breaking down technical language, and using visuals and real-world examples. These strategies help make scientific reading more manageable and meaningful.

Not every student starts with the same reading background. Using clear, supportive reading instruction creates a more equitable classroom. It gives English learners, first-generation students, and students with learning differences an equal chance to succeed in a high-stakes, life-saving field.
