Establishing learning goals is important to ensure the lecture is well-prepared before delivering it to the learners. There are several things to consider when preparing a lecture that students will easily retain. It is not a good idea to cover too much material as it can become difficult for learners to retain the new information. Make sure that the lecture is straight to the point and focuses on analyzing issues. This will encourage critical thinking and discussions. Make the lecture more engaging by adding interactive activities such as breaking the class into groups, including short videos, or having learners answer a poll.

8 Evidence-Based Tips to Make Your Lectures More Engaging—and Memorable

A good lecture is well thought out and planned before being delivered. This includes having students become familiar with the topic before receiving the lecture. A few ways to do this are to have them take a pre-test, ask an engaging question that encourages discussion, or play an introductory video before the lecture. These help elicit curiosity and, in turn, attract the learners' attention.

It is crucial to provide short breaks every 30 minutes. Learners often struggle to pay attention during class, which affects their ability to retain what they are learning. Breaks will help prevent cognitive overload.

Another important factor to make lectures more engaging is to provide visual aids and infographics when applicable. Students learn better with visual aids than lectures without visual aids.

There is always a way to customize and implement other learning strategies into a lecture according to the needs of learners. It is important to understand that no lecture is the same. All lectures are customized in some way because of the topic and the needs of learners. Lectures need to focus on important topics, provide an overview, and be straight to the point. It is also a great idea to include personal stories that are not present in course materials.

Presentation is a great teaching tool to use. However, a presentation can make or break a learning experience. To avoid cognitive overload, keep the presentation short, using the "rule of three," where you divide the topic into three main ideas. To interest the audience at the beginning of the presentation, do a warm-up activity by making the activity interactive.

To make the PowerPoint effective, make sure to face the audience and avoid reading texts in the PowerPoint verbatim. Use an image related to the topic or a chart relevant to interest the learner. Visuals help the audience retain information thoroughly and faster. It makes presentations interactive, memorable, and more enjoyable for them.
