Subway, also called metro or underground, was inspired from the development of the trains. It is an underground railway system which could transport large amount of passengers.

Rapid Transit is a type of a passenger system that is used in urban areas, providing the fast and frequent travel for high capacity of passengers. Because of the need to be grade separated from the other type of traffics, rapid transit systems are usually located in underground tunnels, elevated viaducts, or separated ground level tracks that cannot interact with the rest of the street traffic.

The first urban underground railway was the Metropolitan Railway, which began operations on January 10, 1863. It was built largely in shallow cut and cover tunnels. It was worked by steam trains and despite the creation of numerous vents, was unhealthy and uncomfortable for passengers and operating staff.

This line was opened using steam locomotives that burned coke and, later, coal; despite sulfurous fumes, the line was a success from its opening, carrying 9,500,000 passengers in the first year of its existence.
