Part of your role as EMHPs is to help support young people in maintaining positive change once your sessions come to an end. We can support this by introducing something called "Relapse prevention" techniques at different stages throughout treatment.

Lets imagine your chosen LI intervention (BA, CR, Exposure ect.) as a "main dish", with relapse prevention tools as useful "side dishes" to help prepare for your therapeutic ending whilst, remaining single stranded in approach.

This is an individual learning day, please note comments are not monitored by staff.

The aim here is to help your YP to:
- Know the difference between a lapse and a relapse - Identify early warning signs of relapse
- Create a relapse prevention plan - Identify key skills learnt in treatment (what has helped the most)
- Revisit goals and future goals - Set a series of planned self-review sessions (maybe the 1st of each month)
- Address fears for the future - Where to source on-going help if needed

Consider encouraging your client to think about a specific relapse prevention plan. This one is from psychologytools.com.

It may be beneficial to focus upon "What I will do from now on box" encouraging your young person to pre-emptively think about what they would do if they experienced a lapse in mood. Is there a safe place they can keep all there LI-CBT materials so they can be easily accessed? Is there an activity that always helps them to feel better? Someone they would feel comfortable talking to?

Have a look at the 3 additional work sheets provided and post your initial thoughts on how you would introduce and work through these with your clients.

Why include relapse prevention work?

- CBT can reduce risk of relapse in depression by 50% at 12 months, but 50% still relapse by 2 years post-treatment (Hollon et al., 2005).

- Acute CBT superior to acute medication and comparable to continuation medication in preventing depressive relapse (Cuijpers et al., 2013).

- BA found to be equivalent to CT in preventing relapse / recurrence of depression 2 years post-treatment (Dobson et al., 2008).

Have a quick search of the evidence base and see if together you can identity any additional research supporting CBT and relapse prevention. If you find any interesting research papers please add it with a reference to the bottom of this thread.

Here is a "Maintaining progress" work sheet which combines a therapy blueprint with a relapse prevention plan. It is up to which materials you use with which young people.

This worksheet encourages the YP to think about "high risk situations" and "early warning signs" which can be really helpful in preventing a lapse becoming a relapse.

Remember, please feel free to use these as templates and adapt them to increase accessibility. (I think they could all do with some colour!)
