During the 1930's many people were facing hardship and stress as a result of unemployment, and tough arduous jobs. Many families had to work extremely hard outside of the home just to provide for their family. The only source of letting go and escaping from the daily stress was through literature and other sources of entertainment. As a result, the culture of many families changed during this time period. For example, many people in America went to the movie theater's almost weekly as a habit, watching such movies as, "The Grapes of Wrath." Not only did American culture place movies in high position during this time period, but also literature, radio, sports, etc. Literature in particular helped shape the culture of American during this time period. As a result of new literature such as "Gone with the wind", "Superman", and the magazine, "Life," just like in movies, many people placed this idea of escapism above all in their culture. This new idea of "escapism," became a huge cultural idea because of the new depression, which was especially seen in all forms of entertainment during the 1930's.

Though there were many new cultural ideals brought up because of the Great Depression, there was also ideal's which were emphasized that have been long standing in American culture. For example, the American cultural had this ideal of making the environment better for all its inhabitants (Ex. Jacob Rii's photography book on the urban poor). Jack Conroy's book, "The Disinherited," showed the harsh life of coal miners, and James Farrell's, "Stud Lonigan," portrayed the hardened life of the young working class. Many people also kept this idea of the individual which was also seen through literature and culture during this time period. In the book, "How to win friends and influence People," it emphasized that the best way for people to get ahead was through their own personal initiative. This idea of helping others environments, and the importance of the individual were ideas that were not changed, but strengthened because of the Great Depression.
