It seems like she has more time for herself, something that she never had. She becomes more aware of independence and what she wants to do, and not what her husband or society expects from her.

While Leonce gains control over Edna based on economic and social expectations, Robert initially encourages her freedom and independence by teaching her how to swim. However, despite the differences in the end both men conform to societal norms, not providing Edna with actual freedom.
