Claim: My animal enclosure supports the African Porcupine's need to forage for food, communicate, and engage in enrichment activities.

Evidence: In my enclosure, I included a feeding mechanism that doubles as a "game" for the African Porcupine. I also included a suspended toy that the African Porcupine can climb in and out of. I included large caves, dirt, mud, scrub-brush, and other grassland foliage. Under the dirt are tubers, bark, roots, rhizomes, bulbs, fallen fruit and cultivated crops for the African Porcupine to forage.

Reasoning: I included a feeding "game" mechanism to mimic what it is like for African Porcupines to climb and dig, thus foraging for food. This will keep them entertained and also healthy/fit. I included a suspended toy to fulfill the African Porcupines desire to engage in enrichment activities. It mimics getting over and under trees and scrub-brush, like what it would be like in their natural habitat. I included large caves to fulfill the porcupines needs to hide and protect themselves. I made sure that they were large enough to fit two porcupines so that it fulfills the porcupines needs to be social and have a relationship. I included dirt, mud, scrub-brush, and other grassland foliage to mimic the porcupines natural environment and provide them with places to hide. Finally, I included tubers, bark, roots, rhizomes, bulbs, fallen fruit and cultivated crops so the porcupines could scour for food. These are the reasons that I believe my enclosure meets the porcupines need to forage for food, engage in enrichment, and communicate.

SS/Southern Sea Otters

Claim: My animal enclosure supports the Southern Sea Otter’s need to forage for food, engage in enrichment activities, and communicate.

Evidence: My enclosure includes a hanging hollow ball, hollow hanging log, and a floating log to climb on. Also, it has plenty of space for swimming, moving, and choosing to be in or out of company as they would in their natural habitat. There is oysters, kelp, and fish are in my enclosure but the fish are thrown in at certain times each day to resemble how the Sea Otters forage in wild.

Reasoning: I included items to climb on to help them feel happy, enjoying life in their new enclosure, and exercise. There’s oysters on the bottom of one of the pools, kelp growing in another, and sometimes fish are thrown in to allow the Otters to forage for food as they would in the wild. I added caves and other hiding spaces so they can use their natural instinct to hide and protect themselves if they feel threatened also I made the caves big enough for three Sea Otters so they can be together or solo. Because Sea Otters don’t always stay in the water so I have land included. The Oregon Zoo did an amazing job with the Sea Otters enclosure and doesn't need to be improved but can be.

Claim: My new animal enclosure supports the African Painted dog’s needs by giving them room to forage for food, to communicate, and to be able to engage in to their enriching activities.

Evidence: My enclosure I includes a feeding zipline that encourages them to run across the exhibit like they would normally do outside of captivity. I also included a very long tunnel they can run through leading into glass areas that looks into other exhibits. Also, I added many personal spaces that have mud pools to roll in to imitate bathing in the wild.

Reasoning: Finally, I included a “exercise” game for them to play. It’s where they run in the tunnel and see who can get to the meat at the end of the 1 mile run. (Tunnels have a light system so they aren’t running in the total dark.) They also have small boxes of food that are attached to balloons that float into the exhibit to rip open. Some of the final things I included are, trees to hide in, bushes to play in, bones to chew on, a cardboard truck for them to rip up, & one small waterfall dripping into the dirt, creating a large pool/mud pool to bathe in.

Claim: My African wild dog enclosure allows my animal to get up to full speed, forage like in the wild, be salutary, be in a group, and do enrichment activities.

Evidence: In my encloser their are vending machines for food, a mud pool to cool off in, a pool to swim in, a tunnel to crawl through, a zypline with pictures of animals with meat dangaling from them, a truck to climb in, tire jump, a bunch of bushes to hide in, and 2 personal caves.

Reasoning: I included a zypline with pictures of all the animals they hunt in the wild the pictures would have meet dangaling from them so when they cought the animal they would have to jump to get the meet this would simulate them hunting in the wild. This would keep them fit and it would hopefully keep their hunting instinked in them so the could release them into the wild. I also included a pool so they could have the opertonity to swim and cool off. I also included a few caves to keep their dicier to hide if needed along with a bunch of bushes to keep their dizzier to stalk each other. I also include a whew personal caves so they would have the choice to be salitary or in a group. Also their enclosure aloud them to get close to their distant they travel in the wild.

Claim: My animal enclosed supports the Asian elephants needs to forage for foods, communicate, engage in enrichment activities, and move like they would in the wild

Evidence: In my enclosure I included feeding bags which are bags of hay that dangle high in the air so the elephant has to stretch high up to get the food. They also have feeding boxes where the hay is down low. I also included a 180,000 gallon pool. I included trees, more water options, Bananas, pumpkins, and broken tires.

Reasoning: The feeding devices are similar to what you would find in the wild because in the wild elepahnts have to stretch to get the leaves off the trees and have to reach into small spaces to get the certain food they want. This helps them stretch their muscles and be feed as they would in the wild. I also included many enriching opportunities as if they want to, such as a large pool, logs to balance on, Bannas, and Pumpkins. I also made the male exhibits bigger which have to be the same size. I made it so they could move from each area and at times they can have the choice to be in 4 different areas.

They can play as they would in the wild because there is 5 enrichment opportunities such hammocks, tire swings, feeding puzzles, wood with honey inside of it (also a good snack), and a leather ball.

Reasoning: The wood with honey inside of it would be close to the black bears natural habitat because it represents a bee hive, and its modified so they don’t get hurt because usually bees would sting the black bears. The open space that they have is also somewhat close to their natural habitat because they move up to 15 miles per day. Also their communication is close to the natural habitat because they can communicate freely because of my habitat at the Oregon zoo.

I also included rocks with crustaceans like clams for them to find and eat like they would in the wild. Another thing I added is a bigger pool so they can get up to maximum speed and some solitary space.

Reasoning: The attachments I made will simulate those in the wild. For example the floating platform mimics a floating log and the big pool mimics a lake or a river. Next the slide represents snow. Last, I included the rocks with crustaceans so they can naturally forage as they would in the wild.
This is why I think my enclosure would meet a river otters need to play, be solitary and forage for food.

Claim:
My animal enclosure supports my California Condor’s need to communicate, interact with enrichments, and feed.

Evidence:
In my enclosure I added a area or wall of pine trees so the condors can perch on other trees and not see each other if they want to be solo. I included a “canyon” or a canyon like area so they can nest or pearch in or on rocks. I also made the exhibit more open so the condors have room to fly, glide, or at least circle in there exhibit. There would be different elevation more trees and a bigger but not to big water area to fit the condors needs.

Reasoning:
What I added is similar to what you would find in the animals natural habitat. To start with, the canyon represents the rocky areas the condors would live on in the wilderness so they don’t have to just pearch on trees or the ground. The exibit is more open beacuse in the wild they would have mostly the whole sky to fly in. But in the zoo they should at least have a big enough area to glide around even though there should have a much bigger area. The different elevation is because in the wild the ground is not just one level. The added trees and bigger water area would be because naturally where the would live in the wild there would be lakes, rivers, etc, and forest.

Claim:
My animal enclosure allows my animal to forage for food, communicate with other animals, and participate in enrichments as they would in the wild.
Evidence:
In my enclosure I added chains for the penguins to be able to play on and be able to have an enrichment as there were not many at the Oregon Zoo. In the zoo, they did not have much enrichments for the penguins although, the penguins didn’t have much enrichments the only thing they did was stand on rocks, swim, waddle, and sleep. In my enclosure, I included Inca Terns. Another thing is, you will not be able to hear the penguins communicate. In my enclosure I included rocks and coves, pebbles for the female penguins to nest in, balls, and a floating toy, to be able to be in the water, they could also use this for pushing tool. They did not have the space to be able to get up to speed, my exhibit allows them to dive at least 20 feet underwater and swim at least ten miles to get up to speed while swimming.
Reasoning:
I included these things because it helps the animals with things like communication, foraging, movement, and other things. I included Inca Terns because they had them in the exhibit also used for a symbiosis relationship. I included rocks and coves for the penguins to be in solitary or in groups. I also included for them to be able to use in or out of water, specifically aimed for the babies or kids. You won’t be able to hear them communicate because of temperature control, they live near Peru and Chile where it is hot and here the weather alternates.

Claim:
My animal enclosure allows the North American Black Bear to walk, playwith enrichment toys, and eat as they would in their wild habitat.

Evidence:
I included a pool in my Black Bear enclosure to accomplish the natural environment for the Bears. I also put a hammock so the bears could “hang’’. I included a bunch of berry bushes and logs for climbing on. Under the logs are a bunch of different foods so they can “hunt.”

Reasoning:
I added a bunch of climbing logs because in the wild there are a bunch of logs so bears cane play around in the zoo they don’t have that in the zoo that Also don’t get to “hunt” at all. So with these logs they can get that feeling like there isn’t he wild. I add the berry bushes so they can have a snack when ever they want.

Claim: My animal enclosure supports the California Condor’s need to scavenge for food, communicate with other condors, and do most of their Locomotion as they do in the wild along with enrichment activities for the condors.

Evidence: I included a rock wall, as well as pine trees to cover the condors if they don’t want to be seen or if they want to be alone or with a group; in my enclosure to accomplish their need to move around and get more activity if the condors want to move around for more exercise. The rockwall is to simulate an area in the Grand Canyon which is where they currently live in the wild.

Reasoning: The rock wall in my exhibit represents the Grand Canyon which helps the California Condor know what the terrain is like if they were to leave the Oregon zoo and be put in the Grand Canyon in Arizona. The pine trees I added to my enclosure leave a place for the condors in the zoo to go if they want to be secluded from the other condors in the zoo or if they want to be in a group.

Claim:
My animal enclosure allows my animal to forage for food, communicate with others, and engage in enrichment activity’s.
Evidence:
In my enclosure there is a biofilter for the water. I also included a long straitaway for the penguin to get up-to speed as they would in there natural habitat. I also added an underwater tunnel for visitors to observe the penguins from underwater.
Also there would be a place all around the habitat far the staff to maneuver and clean the poop and gunk inside of the habitat. I also included toys such as plastic chains, also I added pebbles for nesting, with balls, balls filled with snacks and crustaceans, and bridges for enrichments.
Reasoning:
I included a straitaway for the penguin because it helps the animal feel how it feels like going fast like it would in the wild. The reasoning of why I put a underwater tunnel is to have the people to understand how the penguins swim and dive from underwater.finally I have a biofilter because they poop in it a lot of when we were there and it looked gross. The floating balls filled with food allows them to find it, take the food out and eat it as it might simulate how it would find and eat its food as they would in there natural habitat.
