1. Record your initial thoughts and feelings about the course and this task. Are you feeling eager? uncertain? overwhelmed? excited? Have you done this kind of thing before? Do you already have an idea you’d like to develop for this assignment?

Digital media is something I have very little previous experience in and, naturally, is something I am nervous to pursue just because I feel my lack of experience may be of some disadvantage in comparison to other's capabilities. Despite this, I am very excited to branch out from my psychology course and explore myself and my capabilities in this elective.

I would like to consider myself a creative person as I have always had a passion and attachment to creative outlets and mediums such as creative writing, design, art, crafts, reading and film.

While my passion and interest in the course stemmed from the initial interest in learning more about digital media, its uses and how I can learn to be even better at creative thinking, this course is also an interest as my parents own a family business which is still finding its footing. I hope using the skills I learn in this course I can apply them to help boost the exposure of my family business and establishment.

In terms of ideas for the assignment, I don't have any clear direction but possible would love to do an item or activity that is fun, modern, up beat targeting a young adult audience or, a social justice issue and bringing exposure to that.

From my list, my chosen product is a QR code and linked app that work together to help guide social interactions. At the best of times, interacting with people can be daunting, awkward and even hard when you feel overwhelmed and like you aren't welcome. This can effect some people to the point where their development is effected, causing an atrophy in their social skills having a domino effect on mental health. My product aims to remove the stress of awkward small talk and help people more comfortably navigate conversations with strangers or unfamiliar faces.

My product is targeted towards young adolescents, aged 16-20 years old, who struggle with social anxiety, have introverted tendencies, struggle with remembering faces and names, have autism and are overwhelmed in high stimulus situations or hate engaging in small talk. The reason for choosing this group as my audience is because this generation of young adults are more anxious as according to an article written by Dr Claire McCarthy, MD, FAAP 1 in 3 adolescences aged 13-18 suffer from an anxiety disorder with numbers rising by 20% between 2007 and 2012 (McCarthy, 2019). The target audience has most likely struggled with or had bad/negative or awkward experiences when engaging in conversation with new people. This product is branded as a solution for those who want to improve their social skill and become more confident in navigating uncharted social territory. My app also aims to provide the user with tips on navigating overwhelming feelings and how to reduce feeling of panic or anxiety.

McCarthy, C.

Attention:
I intend to make an impact and grab the attention of my audience by creating a lively and colourful scene with themes involving a house party or a social gathering.

Interest:
I intend to make the scene relatable, featuring real teen actors and familiar scenarios so my audience can see themselves represented. By providing them with an interesting hook, I hope to encourage them to stay around before intensifying the tone and my message. my aim is to encourage them to see out the story I'm trying to tell.

Desire:
In first establishing a "teen friendly" environment that, on the surface, seems cheerful and fun, I aim to establish familiarity. The opening scene should appear fun and carry a positive atmosphere, but increasingly get more intense and overwhelming, with a slightly eerie/uncomfortable feel. Once the tone is reached, indicating the point where the social environment has become to much, the tonal change to a calmer and more relaxed environment to display the effect my product can have.

Action:
By watching my video, my audience should feel comforted in knowing that they are not alone in their experiences. My hope is for them to feel motivated enough to download the app and purchase a QR pin to help build a community. In ending my video on a high note, I hope to promote to my audience that helping everyone feel welcomed and connected can promote a positive social environment.

I aim to factors like visuals, colour, light and sound to encapsulate what that feeling is like, initially conveying an anxious/uncertain tone.

Similar to the Headspace ad, I aim to create a shift in tone to powerfully introduce the purpose and effect of my product e.g. a shift from overstimulation and anxiety to calming and comforting. I hope to convey this shift using changes in colour, lighting and editing e.g. warm, high intensity colour to softer, cooler colours.

I want my advertisement to use tone as a tool to make my the scenario real, therefore relatable to my potential audience.

This advertisement will showcase the impact of social anxiety for teenagers and display how my product can alleviate stress.

The advertisement will start with a girl nervously waiting outside of house. She takes shaking breath, rings the door bell and is greeted by a friend and a lively cascade of noises e.g. music, people talking, glasses clinking, food crunching, laughter, phone notification ect. The scene surrounding the girl will seem fun and lively until the camera starts to shake, the clips of people having fun speed up and slow down alternatingly. Over this, the music and any diegetic sound will slowly fade and be replaced by a heartbeat getting increasing louder. The heart beat will stop abruptly as a friend of the girl places a hand on her shoulder. The friend is dressed in purple and blue, contrasting to the other background characters. The light will soften to a calming blue and white hue as the 'friend' passes to the girl a silver QR pin which she opens up breathing exercise, conversation prompts and a basic profile of information about a boy pictured. The phone will pull away and reveals the boy in person waving to her from the couch. The 'friend' disappears as the girl walks the boy and sits down with him. The scene the will end with the girl sitting down on the couch and fading out into a blurred screen, ending with the logo and brand presenting.

Whilst the video is a compilation, all these ads follow a pattern of using KFC's products as a solution to an awkward situation which is what I desire to do with my ad. The second advertisement shows an awkward encounter between two best friends and one of the girl's dates whom she forgets the name of. This the kinda of catchy and humorous energy I want to provide to make my product memorable, however I don't want to take away form the deeper meaning of what my product can achieve so my ad will present a scenario that more realistically provides a strategised solution.

Green, D 2022, KFC - Did Someone Say KFC? The tone and mood intensifies as the man's anxiety builds as everyone begins to stares at him as he walks past. The man escapes to an alley way where he tries to regain composure. Whilst the ad is very dramatised, the message is powerful. elements of the film style including the editing style, quick cuts, eerie music, the sudden absences of the music and heavy breath are elements I would like to experiment with in my own video. The scenario in my video would be dissimilar from this ad to cater to a younger audience.

Fristad, S 2015, Norwegian anxiety commercial 2015, YouTube, viewed 30 March 2023, <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rbh2IVeFHco&t=30s>.

The biggest inspiration for my font choice was headspace's logo. The soft, 'pillowy' looking font is comforting which emulates the brand's tone perfectly to the audience that might have zero understanding of the what the company is about. The logo is also neat, easy to read and distinguishable with level spacing and even size proportions.

Keeping my desired tone, colour scheme and atmosphere in mind. I explored fonts with similar bold, rounded styles however, tried to shy away from ones that where too plain, unoriginal and hard to read.

Pink represents energy, love, playfulness - has also be associated with being calming and uplifting - the to most important messages in my video.

This advertisement shows a woman dealing with all the little things in her day such as; being stuck in traffic, a flickering light above her office cubicle, unable to get a treadmill spot at her gym - which have built up and caused her to feel stressed and overwhelmed. To decompress, she uses a mediation program from Headspace titled 'Feeling Overwhelmed" to cope with her emotions. I particularly like the use of lighting and colour in this ad which provides contrast between the initial and final tone. I would like to incorporate that into my advertisement. This ad is the most similar content wise to my product however my ads to tackle stress in the moment therefore will have a different story and a more specific perspective.

Headspace 2023, Headspace | The Everyday App For January | Commercial, YouTube, viewed 30 March 2023, <https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cu90PZKV_p4>.

‌

This article from ScienceDirect outlines how the establishment of successful peer relationships is incredibly important during the teenage years. The success of these relationships is an indicator of how successful a young person will be in navigating everyday social problems and showing effective use of age-appropriate behavioural skills. The study noted that very few behavioural interventions have been made to help remediate teenagers' social skills. This study looked at suggestive means to improve the effectiveness of peer relationships through utilising a group training procedure, with a focus on problem-solving, behavioural skills and self-esteem.

Christoff, KA, Scott, WON, Kelley, ML, Schlundt, D, Baer, G & Kelly, JA 1985, ‘Social skills and social problem-solving training for shy young adolescents’, Behavior Therapy, vol. 16, no. 5, pp. 468–477, viewed 3 April 2023, <https://doi.org/10.1016/S0005-7894(85)80025-3>.

‌

‌
