Anyone can talk a lot of talk, but to actually be able to be one of those people who can walk that walk, who can be honest, despite consequence and at all times, both with yourself, and with others, is something that is quite difficult for some people, especially our young people, to do. Many of our core moral offenses (lying, cheating, stealing) are violations of integrity. One of my favorite quotes from a lesson in high school is "Tried and true, what about you?". It has stuck with me and is an example I've done my best to set, not only with my own kids at home, but with those I interact with every day.

It not only teaches them to be a better overall human-being by being honest and accepting responsibility, but through modeling it teaches our student's how to better express their faults and failures. It allows us to grow as teachers in admitting the areas that we need to grow in. Mutual respect and trust are essential in a good student-teacher relationship and that can only happen when honesty and integrity are present in both relationships.

When we display empathy, we model caring and relating to someone.  Building the relationship with your students or colleagues helps you to model empathy.  If we truly practiced having empathy, our schools and society would probably be a happier place.

Students frequently express a fixed mindset whenever a task is challenging. This is when GRIT is needed. Perhaps something is challenging now, but when students demo grit, they are still working toward the goal of accomplishing the skill or task.  Frequently, even gifted learners are challenged when  the answer or task is not easy for them so they need grit, as well. I even have to display grit as I do my job!

To me, grit means that we push through those seemingly impossible moments and excercise the power of yet. One of my favorite sayings is, "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." Pushing our students to use their own grit and find the power of yet is so important, because it is a lifelong skill that is much needed.
