Singapore is already a trading port. I still like the way it is in Singapore. And also the Dutch controlled most f the trade in the past. That is why i suggested it to stay the same as today. The dutch took most of the controls of the trade last time and i do not want to let Singapore being a British trading port. And up till now Singapore is still a free trading port a still stay the same today. Raffles also give 3 very good reasons why picking Singapore to be a free trading port. I love Singapore!!!!!

. In the late 14th century, Singapore was under the rule of Parameswara until he was expelled by the Majapahit or the Siamese. It then came under the Malacca Sultanate and then the Johor Sultanate. In 1819, Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles negotiated a treaty whereby Johor allowed the British to locate a trading port on the island, leading to the establishment of the British colony of Singapore in 1819.


During World War 2, Singapore was conquered and occupied by the Japanese Empire from 1942 to 1945. When the war ended, Singapore reverted to British control, with increasing levels of self-government being granted, culminating in Singapore's merger with the Federation of Malaya to form Malaysia in 1963. However, social unrest and disputes between Singapore's ruling People's Action Party and Malaysia's Alliance Party resulted in Singapore's expulsion from Malaysia. Singapore became an independent republic on 9 August 1965.

In the early 19th century, a great source of income for the British through trading was their lucrative opium-silk and tea trade with China. The route that the traders took to travel to China was from Europe, around Africa, to SEA and then, through the Straits of Melaka, they would continue on their journey towards China. The Straits of Melaka thus became a crucial route that British traders would take when travelling to China. Singapore, being strategically located at the opening of the Straits of Melaka, is able to fulfill its purpose both as a port of call and a naval base to ensure the safety of the British ships that were passing through the region. Setting up a port in Singapore would also allow traders to refuel and restock without having to deviate from their main route. Singapore would also be able to attract traders to trade at Singapore since it is much more accessible, being just at the opening of the Straits of Melaka and at the Malay Peninsula. This made Singapore a good trading post. More trading opportunities would also be established with the development of Singapore into a port, and in the process, more money can also be earned. Singapore also had natural resource – timber – from the large pieces of uncut forests, thus making it suitable since timber is required for the port to be able to repair and build boats. Singapore was also surrounded by deep waters, allowing harbors to be built just along the fringes of the island. The deep waters would prevent ships from crashing into bedrocks when anchoring near the island and ultimately, fewer losses would also be incurred due to storms and shipwrecks. The harbor, being closer to the island itself would make it easier for the British to defend the harbor from pirates, making it safer. The geographic properties of Singapore, therefore allowed it to be chosen as the place where a port would be set-up.
