The Tet offensive was on the Lunar Holiday. It happened in January of 1968. It had the North Vietnamese, along with communist Viet Cong working together as comrades. Together they made an attack on many important areas in South Vietnam. It reduced the amount of support from the U.S. public in the war. At the end of the battle both sides were highly impacted, and had thought they won it. The U.S. learned that it would be harder than they thought to win, or bring Vietnam back together.

The Gulf of Tonkin incident or the U.S.S. Maddox incident was when the U.S. fired warning shots at Northern Vietnamese submarines. It happened in disputed waters. N.V. fired back at us. There was a new ship with the U.S. called the U.S.S. Maddox. We had thought that N.V. fired back at us, so President L.B.J. was authorized to order bombing runs. We eventually realized that there was not a firing back towards us after we had dropped bombs on them.

This battle happened in 1954. It was France fighting against Indochina. Indochina was trying to gain independence from France by having Ho chi Minh go to France and communicate with them, but they refused. There was a short fight in Haiphong. France's Navy came and killed around 6,000 civilians. Soon after that happened the Vietminh fought back by attacking the Frenchmen in their area. France started realizing that if they wanted to beat such a gorilla like warfare it would be very challenging, so they decided to take different ideas. They ended up giving Them there independence.

This was a U.S. attempt to overthrow Fidel Castro. It was orchestrated by the C.I.A. in 1961. We had tried to use Cuban exiles that had fled the country and were past soldiers. It did not work out, and was a big embarrassing failure for the U.S.. This showed how powerful Cuba still was at the time, with countries like the Soviet Union backing them up.
