Some of those reasons
 were that natural disasters could have changed the island environment and 
 that could have caused the birds to adapt and change. 

Another reason could be  Weather related conditions. If the climate gets hotter then the birds have to change the way the eat because some food sources will not be there, If it gets colder, natural selection will choose the birds with the most feathers causing the traits to vary.

Another way the birds traits changed was the amount and type of food that was available to them.
