What is Whiteness

Whiteness in general has always had a vague meaning. It doesn't adhere to one specific thing. Whether you come from England or Ireland to America, you are considered white. Because of this, you have many more privileges. Because of this, people with darker skin is seen as "not white" therefore not giving them the same opportunities as people born with white skin. In the book "Their Eyes Were Watching God", this is seen quite often when the main character, Janie, lives in the backyard of a wealthy white family. Her grandmother was raped and then beaten after giving birth to Janie's mother, Leafy. Nanny's (Janie's grandmother) slave owners were planning to sell Leafy off when she turned a month old. The article and the book relate to one another because they both talk about how white people have a much easier time in life than colored people.
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B3MzUtWL2X_qQS0teWdjQWQwUlE/view

This video shows how people are ignorant when they meet somebody who isn't white. They could ask which country they were born or from and the person who isn't white would give the obvious answer "I'm from the US." Ignorant white people would not believe them even when it is obvious. This video relates to the book "Thie Eyes Were Watching God" because the video explains how he meets many ignorant people who do not believe him because he is not white on the daily and in the book, many white people don't even try to understand Janie or black people.
https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/projects/your-stories/conversations-on-race/stories/kevin-nadal

This short story is about the author's childhood growing up and how her teachers and peers were racist and discriminaatory towards her. Her teachers were claiming that she needed to "learn respect" even though she was doing everything she was told to do correctly and accurately. Her teacher in second grade gave her a test designed for junior high students. When she passed the test, her teacher made her crumble up and eat the paper because her teacher claimed she was "not being respectful." This short story relates to the book "Their Eyes Were Watching God" because in the book, Janie, her mother, and her grandmother were all treated wrongly just because of their skin color.
https://genius.com/Sherman-alexie-indian-education-annotated

Too Many Americans Think Patriotism Means Racism and Xenophobia

After the 9/11 terrorist attack, many people decided to blame an entire race because it was easy for them. They hate all Islamic or Muslin people all because of one terrible event. Yes, one group did decide to cause the attack. That does not mean that it was the decision of an entire race. Hate is easy for some people because it allows them to release pent up frustration, anger, whatever negative emotion it may be and they aim it towards people of a certain race because it is what many others are doing. This article about racism after the 9/11 incident relates to the book "Their Eyes Were Watching God" because in the time period of the book, racism was extremely common and hate towards black people was everywhere. All the hate was unnecessary. It was all toward black people just because they had nothing else to hate.
https://www.thenation.com/article/too-many-americans-think-patriotism-means-racism-and-xenophobia/

This article is about a black woman who grew up in an area with almost no black people. She has encountered many racist white people who believe that the country "should be white" because they grew up in mainly white communities. She has been affected by these people because she has been harassed by some people who believed that she shouldn't have been there. This article relates to the book "Their Eyes Were Watching God" because Janie is always having to deal with racism from white people because she isn't white. She grew up with discrimination, harassment, and a ton of other things.
https://www.npr.org/2011/09/15/140467269/feeling-like-a-tourist-being-black-in-new-england
