is a character in a story who may have started as a hero and became known as a bad guy or is an antagonist throughout the story. A villain is normally shifty, devious, and often deceptive. They may use flattery techniques to obtain what they want. Their intentions are dark and problematic towards other characters. They cause corruption to anybody and everybody who they do not care for.

The star Michael Myers in the movie, Halloween, is a good example of a gothic villain. He is a psychopath who has many family problems. When he was only 6 years old, he murdered his sister. He has to spend 15 years in an insane asylum. After escaping, he went after the rest of his family and wanted to kill all of them. This dark, luminous, haunting shadow that was hiding around the corner was Michael.

Rhetoric of a Gothic Villain

A gothic villain has more of a pathos appeal, because normally if they do their job right, it will leave everybody in the movie, as well as the audience frightened. Ethos is another appeal due to the character of the author. The author is the brain of the whole movie or story. It depends on how creative and spooky the author's ideas may be, for the movie to be more scary. Kairos is another rhetoric appeal that is used in gothic stories. Kairos has to do with time and that is important for readers to know the time period in which the story is written about. For instance, the story about Michael Myers was written in the late 1970's, and the movie fit that time period by the acting, clothing, and the way it was filmed. It was shown as a old and spooky movie, which went together very nicely, because it caused some good scares.

Not all villains are bad the whole time. In the movie Thor and The Avengers, Loki starts as a good, genuine character, and then when figuring out he was not actually Odin's son, he plots revenge in order to take the throne. He attempts to apologize, and when not accepting forgiveness, he attempts suicide. In the Avengers, his goal is to take over the world. His goal was to be superior to everyone else and end the wars between the human race. In Thor: The Dark World, he drops his attitude when he saw his mother pass away. He tried to sacrifice himself to save Thor. In the rest of the movies, he goes back and forth between being good and evil. Even in some scenes, when he was being evil, he was only pretending in order to eventually help Thor.
