His father explained Gatsby's desire for power, wealth, success, and the separation from his family in this big future. When he was young he attempted to obtain this wealth by following a strict schedule and leaving his home in his teens.

Daisy had the wealth and power he dreamed of, however she had the same wants to materialism that he did not possess. He hides this from her with his uniform. She represented all of Gatsby's dreams and later he falls in love with her. 

“[Her house] amazed him - he had never been in such a beautiful house before. But what gave it an air of breathless intensity, was that Daisy lived there - it was as casual a thing to her as his tent out at camp was to him. There was a ripe mystery about it.. ,” (Fitzgerald 155).

For the rest of his life he uses his materialistic possessions and large parties to get her attention. He hopes that she will leave Tom and he will be good enough for her. His whole life is an illusion to draw her in.
