This is a sculpture near where I used to live in Seattle, Washington. It is a statue of the historical figure, Vladimir Lenin. It was made by the Bulgarian sculptor, Emil Venkov and was originally displayed in Czechoslovakia. After the Velvet Revolution, a teacher from Seattle found it in a scrapyard and brought it back to America. It's lived in Freemont ever since, although it has no current owner. Not all of the locals like it though and it's frequently vandalised!

There are 100 ironmen dotted along Crosby shoreline,
Gormley apparently used himself as a model.
The beach is tidal therefore the men look different at low/high tide and sunrise/sunset.
They're ever changing, and a view I never tire of.

During the second week of August the Benson Sculpture Garden in Loveland, USA, is home to the largest outdoor juried sculpture show in the country. Over 2,000 sculptures created by more than 160 national and international artists are features during this weekend-long event. Sadly it is cancelled this year due to Covid-19. This is a place I have been several times, Crosby Beach and one of Gormley's Iron men. People put clothes on them and it is uncanny how human they seem from distance. When they were first put up, there were problems with people thinking some were real people drowning in the Irish Sea. I forget how many there are but its around 100 odd and they are all numbered. It is called "Another Place". They are spaced out and some are completely submerged in sand or water according to their relation to the sea, I live quite near another of Gormley's works, The Angel of The North- mocked at first but now I think there would be uproar were it to be removed

I unexpectedly came across this in Kew Gardens a few months ago. I think it is so beautiful. A perfect example of a sculpture seeming to grow out of its setting. The whole surface of it is textured with leaf veins and the cut-out leaf-shaped holes allow the viewer to see through it to the real trees beyond.

Lina is a 10-metre tall steel sculpture, located 11 kilometres north from the city of Perth. The sculpture was created by Tony Jones after the inauguration of the new Stirling Civic Centre in 2005. The sculpture refers to an Italian woman named Lina who lived locally. She represents the Italian culture and way of life in the city of Stirling with a reference to the market gardens and its strong Eastern European sense of community, which are still very prevalent today.

During the winter of 1983, Nash dug up and replanted thousands of bluebell bulbs to form a 30 metre ring on the hillside at Cae’n-y-Coed. When the bluebells flowered in the spring, the circle was visible for a few weeks. After four years it dispersed back into the landscape.

This is Constellation by Jonathan Wright. It is the first sculpture to be placed on Hove Plinth, on the seafront at Hove, East Sussex. The plinth is an initiative of Hove Civic Society, inspired by the Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square, the idea being for a new sculpture to be place on it every couple of years.

Although the sculpture, by Epstein, was made before WWII and the destruction and re-build of the cathedral, it seems to sit there and make a silent comment on its surroundings

The Widows and Bairns Sculptures by Jill Watson are situated in the fishing villages of the Scottish Borders (Eyemouth, Cove, Burnmouth) who lost 189 fishermen in a storm in October 1881. On the plinth they depict the anguished women and children looking out to sea. The plinth itself list the boats lost. The statues are particularly poignant for me personally as my great, great grandfather lost his life on a merchant ship on that night off Dunbar.

This is the Holbein horse sculpture by Werner Gürtner in Freiburg. It has become a local tradition for people to paint and decorate the sculpture (here pictured with a knitted jumpsuit). Recently the sculpture was restored to its original condition as over the years the paint had built up so much that the original detailing was lost. I think it is a really interesting example of how the public can contribute to art and how vandalism can be positive.

This sculpture, located in the city centre beside the River Lagan, is probably Northern Ireland's best known piece of public art today. The scales of the fish are decorated with historical images and newspaper headlines about the history of Belfast, alongside children's art. The sculpture also contains a time capsule.

I love this - it was taken about 18 months ago at the Yorkshire Sculpture Park. I cant recall the artists name. It is a Sculpture of a tree split by lightning and filled with what appears to be gold leaf. It is part of the parkland, and suggest to me that the lightning has transformed the tree.

Under Eminescu's bust we see a muse. Many people think it's Veronica Micle, but it's actually Caliope. In Greek mythology, she was the muse of Music, Song, Dance and Eloquence. In classical times, she is considered to be the muse of Epic Poetry.

This has been our main walking route during the corona crisis, when we were allowed to go 500m from home. The sculpture is a favorite of children, who climb all the different shapes (not all of which are in this photo).

I discovered The Garden of Cosmic Speculation designed by Charles Jencks about 20 years ago, by chance, and was quite blown away by it. There are many sculptures there - look this up on line.
I organised a trip for 110 inner city kids to go their on a private visit (most had had little art experience and after the visit 108 of them wanted to go back!

I like it. Because It has movement - Rembrandt can get up at any moment! He's posing his sketchbook on his knee, eyes on the Amstel river, trying capture the interplay of light, clouds, water and sunlight (and wind and rain). This sculpture is situated in my small town and was inspired by the local industrial heritage of the textile industry. The idea of it was to show a piece of fabric under a microscope and the way that pieces of thread are woven together. This sculpture is on the promenade in the town where I grew up. It used to be a fishing town, and the figures represent a family waiting for their husband/father to return from the sea. I love this picture of it, because you can see the sea that they are looking out to, and a beautiful but ominous sky. There are often flowers left at the feet of the figures or in their arms, as memorials to family members who were lost at sea.

Saw these sculptures at an exhibition. On first glance I could not understand what they were suppose to represent but when I realised they were all different human forms from standing to lying down they took on a new meaning and I enjoyed walking around the room and trying to work out what pose each sculpture was representing. I was fascinated by how Gormely was able to allow people to connect and recognise human characteristics such as vulnerability in what could appear to be on first glance a few dull looking slabs.

Beautiful Carrara marble pebble by David Worthington in the gardens at Dunvegan Castle on the island of Skye. Love it for its simplicity of form, its purity of material, its suggestion of lightness as it looks like it’s hovering above the ground, it’s tactility and the fact that it rotates when touched. It ticks a lot of boxes for me!

This is at Vadslo, a German Field of Honour from World War I. It's named Grieving Parents from Kathy Kohlwitz, a left wing artist. Hitler didn't dare to touch her, because of her popularity with the veterans.

The cemetry is about, I say, 180 by 240 feet and have 30,000 bodies, about thirty under each tile.

It shows the madness of war, there is no glory, no heroism, nothing, just two people a man and a woman in simple civilian c loths. I learned the the tile where these statues kneeled is the grave of the son of the artist.

This sculpture is very moving. In 1881, 189 men died in waters just outside the town's harbour during a bad storm. Many died in view of their wives and children on shore.
Watson recreated the exact number of women and children who were left behind at each town: Eyemouth, St Abbs, Burnmouth and Cove. There is a sculpture in each town. At Eyemouth, there were 78 widows and 182 children.

This was commissioned by the Cathedral and the Mohegan Tribe from Connecticut USA, and unveiled in 2006. It celebrates the life of a 36 year old chief who died in 1736. His tribe had helped the first settlers in New England survive the cold and repel Indian attacks. They became allies of the English but their lands were stolen and not returned. He sailed to London in 1735 to petition George II for the return of the stolen land, but contracted smallpox and died. His tribe sent a stone (Sachem=stone) which was carved with ancient forms by Peter Randall-Page. HM Queen unveiled the it alongside the tribal chairman Bruce Two Dogs Bozsum and the US Ambassador - granting the audience that Mahomet never received.

Originally was produced by Epstein in 1913 to show the effect of the modern machine age, as part of the vorticist group, with the distorted operator perch astride a ready manufactured rockdrill from a slate quarry (pictures on the left). Following the death of a fellow artist in the trenches of France in 1914, Epstein was so upset, as the rock drill made the same sound as a WW1 machine gun, he destroyed the original art work, making a bronze out of the remaining head, torso and mutilated arm (picture on right). The art work resonates throughout the twentieth century as man's destructive power.

This 20C sculpture has had a sad start to live. The sculpture was donated by a local resident, to commemorate a prize-winning cow her father owned. Well, times have changed, the community is no longer rural farmland, and has a more globally diverse population. The objections were so strong that the city council gave Charity back. I have thought of this quirky sculpture many times, thinking I would like to see her installed in the spacious grounds of my apartment building; harking back to a more peaceful time.

I first saw the sculpture of Geoffrey Clark at Coventry Cathedral for which he produced several pieces of cast aluminium sculpture using a lost polystyrene foam technique that is now rarely used. It produces an interesting surface texture that can sometimes be mistaken for shuttered concrete. This sculpture brings to mind the brutalist architecture that sprang up in the 1970s. Its simplicity of form and aggressive presence dominates any space it is exhibited. This is about a metres long and 400mm wide but it appears much larger than it actually is.

This is the closest sculpture to my home. Atom rests on the hillside above Wycoller village and forms a view point and a shelter. Constructed in ferro-cement with a surface coating of metal-based paint. From inside, its circular viewing spaces frame views of the surrounding countryside.

Gyarah Murti The massive, glistening black sculpture depicting Gandhi’s iconic Dandi March of 1931 stands proudly in the heart of the city, easily visible on the Sardar Patel Marg, near Willingdon Crescent. This poetic sculpture by veteran artist and sculptor Devi Prasad Roy Chowdhury shows ten Indian people following Gandhi on his path-breaking Civil Disobedience protest, hence the name - 'Gyarah Murti'. Gandhi’s iconic retinue in the sculpture includes a woman with her head covered following close after him; a cluster of three men including a turbaned Sikh visibly of high pedigree, a Hindu scholar with a cap and an emaciated Muslim peasant; a Hindu man wearing a turban as a mark of intellectual distinction, with a religious mark etched on his forehead; an impoverished peasant looking far ahead, bearing no marks of class, caste or religion on his body; a Christian priest; another woman in a skirt and a young boy egging on a weary old man to travel farther.The prolific artist D.P. Roy Chowdhury (1899-1975), has created poetry in stone and on canvas. Throughout his life, he remained an artist who is said to have moved with and among the general public, choosing his figures and models from there. There has often been a lot of discussion about identifying the individuals of the Gyarah Murti group. But it is a pointless adventure, his realism is mixed with a stroke of imaginative fantasy.

Cendera Lambang Kenangan - Loosely translated, this is the Symbol of Memories. It was erected to commemorate the silver jubilee of the naming of the city to Bandar Seri Begawan. The whole structure includes the arch and the water fountain. Designed by Arkitek Idris, the sculpture was funded by the Brunei Shell Petroleum Company. Inscribed on the arch are the words, 'Bandar Seri Begawan 1970-1995', to welcome all into the infamous Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Park.

I decided to choose the Mae West lips sofa by Salvador Dali. There is a version of it at Brighton museum. According to the V&A the piece was made in 1938 (designed 1937/1938) with reproductions in the early 70's. I chose this work as i have always had a fascination with surrealism and i love the fact that the sculpture is a sofa!

This is one of the most harrowing pieces of sculpture as it shows a starving Irish family during the potato famine. One of the most poignant figures is of the Father who holds his dead child in his arms. I saw it many years ago and found it realy evocative of the horrors of the famine and the appalling treatment of the people at that time by some others who did have food. It just stuck in my mind.

It celebrates the historical links that the area has with horse breeding and training, and is installed on a patch of open land that has been landscaped alongside a new housing development (we've walked past it everyday during lockdown!). This is one of 'The Kelpies' located near Falkirk. It's by Andy Scott. A Kelpie is a kind of mystical water creature (this one is very horse-like) and as far as I know it's a particularly Scottish word or maybe Celtic. The Kelpies have real impact and look amazing with the sun on them. The sculpture was created as part of a new parkland project opened in 2014 and is located alongside an extension to the Forth and Clyde canal. As an aside if you visit the area its worth checking out the Falkirk Wheel which is a really sculptural canal boat-lift with amazing views of the surrounding hills.

This is described as one of the world's largest ceramic sculptures and is on display at the Eden Project in Cornwall. It's blue, covered in wave patterns and puffs out little vapour rings which represent one of the world's smallest but most important bacteria. 3 billion years ago cyanobacteria started to perform oxygenic photosynthesis, so producing oxygen for the first time.
The sculpture is made in the form of a stromatolite which is a massive stack of fossilised cyanobacteria.
The little vapour rings puff out (can't remember the mechanism) and drift off towards the ceiling.
It holds it's own in an already imposing space with the little puff noises every so often.
But is it art or is it science? I don't know! I think it's both. It was very interesting. The picture doesn't give the best impression of the lovely blue glaze.

Chihuly is a glass sculptor who makes beautiful pieces with colourful, fragile glass. He has exhibited all over the world but has a permanent exhibition at the Chihuly glass and Garden museum in Seattle. All the sculptures are beautiful but I chose this one in particular because it makes me smile - the colours, the shapes and the reflections. Like Blackpool illuminations on a rainy night - possibly reminding me of a childhood memory.

This photo features probably my favourite sculpture from Phlegm's Mausoleum of Giants exhibit near central Sheffield which I had the fortunate opportunity to volunteer at. For a few months the artist effectively took over an abandoned cutlery works factory before it was set to be demolished and transformed into a modern apartment complex. Indeed the sculptures mostly had to be built on site from scratch due to their size. Although the giants shown have since been laid to rest, several murals created by Phlegm in his signature style can be found across the city and a virtual tour can also be found online.

I visited Pisa in 2010 and was walking round the Camposanto. I don't normally take photos of statues (or paintings). I was surprised to see one of Fibonacci but was more surprised to see this with a woman on the plinth Mossotti was a physicist. I thought that the woman looked very elegant and so I took a photo. I know nothing more as my Italian is virtually non existent.

The Open University’s Tree of Learning sculpture, in the Betty Boothroyd Library on campus at Walton Hall, Milton Keynes. The 22ft (6.7m) tall tree, was created by metalwork artist, Clare McHugh, known as MissFire, for the 50^th Anniversary of the Open University, last year, 2019. Iron Man by Anthony Gormley is in the centre of Birmingham pushing his way out of the pavement under the rather disapproving gaze of Queen Victoria on a neighbouring plinth. It's a bit of a marmite one for brummies but if you stand and look it at it for any length of time someone will nearly always strike up a conversation with you!

This is the only sculpture in Skipton where I live. I have included it as although it is very true to life , the actual quality of the sculpture might be ignored. It has got the intensity of movement that Fred Trueman had when he bowled.

I saw this sculpture for the first time a few years ago when visiting the Tate Modern in London, now I go and look at it every time I visit. It's about three meters tall and very wide, and the reflective black ceramic is extremely overwhelming as when you look into the sculpture it appears to envelop you. It gives the viewer a feeling of wanting to step into the sculpture and let it surround you, and while that wasn't really an enjoyable feeling as I'm super claustrophobic it's something that will always stick with me.

This installation at the Olympic Park was made almost singlehanded by Rob Heards to commemorate the 19,240 soldiers who lost their lives on the first day of the Battle of the Somme. Each cloth wrapped figure has a name. I was drawn to this memorial because of its scale, short- lived display, the personal representation and the fragility of the medium. To me these represent the transient nature of all life more powerfully than a stone or bronze memorial.

Triceratops by Bill Billings (1979) Created from concrete and chicken wire, the Triceratops at Peartree Bridge is by local artist Bill Billings. The Triceratops is repainted from time to time, with designs often coming from local school children. The Triceratops had a repaint in 2018 by Bill Billings son Ryan, using traditional colours.

The Ghost Tree Whitworth Park, Manchester
Created by Anya Gallaccio this work was created as a reference to loss, memory and recreation. It was conceived when the gallery was going an extensive expansion. In the process one of the plane trees at the side of the gallery died and Anya recreates this tree in stainless steel as a memorial to the one which had gone before. Whitworth Park has a sculpture walk and there are around 10 different pieces to look at. I particularly like the tree as it fits so well into it's surroundings. A metal tree in an industrial city.

The bronze statue honoring Ahmed Muhiddin Piri (1465/70 – 1553), better known as Piri Reis (Turkish: Pîrî Reis or Hacı Ahmet Muhittin Pîrî Bey), was an Ottoman admiral, navigator, geographer and cartographer. It is located in a public park near the Bosphorus, which is chosen to honor his service at the sea.

He is primarily known today for his maps and charts collected in his Kitab-ı Bahriye (Book of Navigation), a book that contains detailed information on navigation, as well as very accurate charts (for their time) describing the important ports and cities of the Mediterranean Sea. He gained fame as a cartographer sis Tpafirst world map (prepared in 1513) was discovered in 1929 at the Topkapı Palace in Istanbul.

Uttoxeter in England has two sculptures by Andy Scott. They are sculptures of a Bull and a Centaur and are situated on roundabouts in the market town. Andy Scott has also designed the Kelpies in Falkirk.

Spotted this yesterday, walking in the gardens, which has a range of fine sculpture in various styles. No obvious identifier about (unless we missed it), and a quick look about online hasn't helped. Seems to be representational - a bird and a rabbit, maybe? - but they sit well in the location, and resonate well with the great Yorkshire stone landscapes.

One of my favourite public sculptures in England is the Quadriga atop Wellington Arch in London. The sculpture depicts Nike, the winged goddess of victory, descending on the chariot of war. This photo is from a few years ago when Anya Hindmarch suspended giant, inflatable chubby hearts across London, which brought a smile to my face.

I live in Cornwall, and.am always enchanted by Barbara Hepworth’s garden. It is an utterly magical place, and you’re allowed to touch, almost impossible to resist with some of Hepworth’s work!

This beautiful horse by Rachel Long, stands on s spit of beach opposite the harbour at Wells Next the Sea in Norfolk. As the tide rises the horse is submerged sometimes with only its head visible, and I find this heroic somehow. I imagine the horse swimming against the tide, gradually re-emerging as the sea retreats.
I understand that the Horse is removed for the winter and I think it’s reappearance marks an event, a bit like putting up the Christmas tree.

Dezenas de obras foram instaladas em espaços públicos tornando-se verdadeiros ícones, como “O Beijo”, no Jardim Diana, um dos Jardins mais bonitos da cidade, numa alusão aos jovens que se encontravam ali para namorar. The Journey

I took this photo in the foyer of Hull Railway Station (East Yorkshire) last year. The work was created by Huw Morris Jones (HMJ) and called 'The Journey' (2017). I believe it is a prototype for a series of larger sculptures that were to be located at the side of a motorway and periodically moved, completing the journey from Hull to Liverpool.

Each time I travel through the station I enjoy looking at its strong geometric form and the story that it tells. I don't know if it's intentional, but there is also a sculpture near by of the poet Philip Larkin made in a more traditional style. To me the contrast in styles enhances and magnifies the sculptural qualities of both.

Messenger is the name of this sculpture which now stands outside the Theatre Royal in Plymouth, UK; here she is being brought in to the city on a barge, as she was too big to transport to the city centre by road due to various bridge height restrictions. Her name refers to the role of an actor in breathing life into the words of a writer. She is in a crouching position, ready to spring into life.

The ‘Teulu Family Group’ sits in Ealing Town Square in the shopping mall.
Ive never looked up its background till now so its very interesting to know that the artist Robert Thomas, taught at Ealing Art School in the 1960s and lived on Mattock Lane. He made the sculpture in 1985 and in 2005 a second cast was made and placed in Cardiff, to mark the City’s centenary.

Sculpture at Nottingham University, by Elpida Hadzi-Vasileva. Created from two elms that had died from Durch Elm disease, they are inverted trees. The gilding follows the patterns made by beetles as they destroy to tree. Created in 2019. The 2 trees are quite imposing and I love the combination of natural shape with the gold design. This sculpture is in Bogotá-Colombia.This sculpture by Jim Amaral was made in the water mirror of the Davivienda building in the Seventh race in 1996 as a tribute to femininity. It is worth asking why he speaks in the singular when it comes to three figures and why his "wings" are more like elephant ears, as an inevitable reference to Dumbo. There is no dislike between tastes, but sometimes believing that people know what a monument is about without a sign or informational reference, is what prevents us from understanding what is heritage and what is not.

📹This sculpture is outside Milton Keynes' library. I like the simplicity of it and also the concept of two women sharing a secret outside a place full of information.

Managed to upload this now on Chrome. Sports Day, by Mike Winstone, on West Street in Gateshead. This is an old photo as the Wilkinson branding behind it has changed in at least the last few years, but it hasn't changed much apart from needing a bit of TLC! It was sculpted around 1986 and has always been in the same spot, and used to be multicoloured until it was fairly quickly painted black for some reason. Situated on a hill overlooking my hometown of Wednesbury, this sculpture by Steve Field represents the eight legged horse of the Anglo Saxon God Woden (Norse Odin). In Venice, if you walk along the Riva delle Sette Martiri and towards the Giardini is this partially submerged representation of a Partisan Woman. I find it deeply moving. Unfortunately it was damaged in last year's aqua alta and is currently being restored.

The Kanheri Caves are a group of caves and rock-cut monuments cut into a massive basalt outcrop in the forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, on the former island of Salsette in the western outskirts of Mumbai, India. They contain Buddhist sculptures and relief carvings, paintings and inscriptions, dating from the 1st century CE to the 10th century CE. Kanheri comes from the Sanskrit Krishnagiri, which means black mountain.

We also currently have an excellent artistic blacksmith , Chris Bramhall, who has created lots of great works for the town including the marker for the long distance walk that starts in our town-the Cumbria Way.

This sculpture of Saint Peter now resides within the Royal Albert Memorial Museum in Exeter but once stood proudly on the intersection of the high street and fore street overlooking the well in the middle of the crossing. The sculpture was removed and conserved by the museum during the 80's as damage made it dangerous to remain at hight.
This sculpture is a favourite of mine because of the beautiful bright colours and the resounding message of Early modern Exeter's deep Catholic connections as the 'ever faithful city' fighting against evil and temptation.

Recently, I visited Belfast for the first time and was in awe of this sculpture, 'Eco'. The sculpture 'Eco' that has recently been erected outside the New Library at the Queen's University of Belfast. Sitting at the main entrance to the library it is "seamlessly landscaped into the granite paving and lit for maximum effect"; it will also "contain a speaker which will softly play the sound of running water emphasising the concept of reflection and refraction".

Representing the three main rivers that provide much of Adelaide’s water: the Torrens is depicted as a woman holding a swan; the Onkaparinga, a woman with a heron; the Murray, an Aboriginal man holding an ibis.

Crawick Multiverse is a huge land art installation by the late Charles Jencks which was described to us a being a bit like Marmite (you love it or hate it). Prior to our visit I think we had expected the manicured landforms of his other projects however given this is a reclaimed open cast site it is a much much wilder experience than say the installation at the Gallery of Modern Art in Edinburgh. He is credited by many as having defined the the term Post-Modernism in Architecture.

Cloaked Horseman
Bristol's 'Cloaked Horseman' apparently checking out the time on the tower of the 14th Century St. John On The Wall. The statue, by David Backhouse, stands in front of St Bartholomew's House in the centre of Bristol. It was commissioned by Haslemere Estates and presented to the city in 1984.

My sculpture photos are from sculpture parks and holidays overseas which seem a long way off now. I've seen municipal sculpture in Hull and Bristol since March but nothing to light my enthusiasm. Here, in my local towns I can largely think of ancient monuments - there is a St Eleanor Cross in Dunstable. My husband is self-shielding so we are still leading a semi-lockdown life. Every day I walk up the hill to the chalk downlands and an ancient earthwork, past this ceramic chakra totum. I like that the chakras are also anatomical, to remind me of my past life as a medical student and GP.

I visited the Yorkshire Sculpture Park last month. The artist, Joana, uses different a variation of materials for her works, this one being made of fabrics, another made from saucepans. The colours and concept of this work had me in awe. Valkyrie Marina Rinaldi (2014) represents Valkyries from Norse Mythology, echoing female empowerment in these figures. The aura of this being a large lone colourful sculpture commanded all the attention. godly.

I loved the bright colours and playfulness of the pieces in the gallery but was impressed by the scale and emotion of the large wooden outside pieces. They speak of lost childhood, parenthood, whimsy, as well as a darker edge to the human psyche. I loved the visual contradiction between the monumental scale of the pieces , yet in the landscape they appear as toys or playing pieces on a board game.

Sheep piece by Henry Moore.
I used to love watching the sheep rub themselves up against this wonderful sculpture when I volunteered at the Foundation. They use it as a shelter in wind, rain, snow and sun and the patina at the bottom of the sculpture shows their interaction. It part of his Mother and Child theme and he was fascinated by the sheep who used to visit him each morning outside his maquette studio.I no longer live in Hertfordshire but have very fond memories of Perry Green.

This sculpture has been in the press recently. Whilst I appreciate the sculpture as an artwork I feel it lets down the memory of Mary Wollenstonescraft. The female figure is much smaller and less prominant than it appears in photos. You certainly get a sense of dynamism and change.

I always consider the interaction between this red man and the blue man as "hugging" each other. Yet as I searched for the details of this sculpture, it was titled "The Boxers". This sculpture is made in 1987 by Keith Haring, located in the center of Berlin. I encounter it every time when I go to Staat-Bibliothek. Every time when I look at the "couple", it reflects my "updated feelings" and I see inner-self as two separate yet interlocked figures. They are sometimes lovers and "fighting" boxers in other times.

My son took me to this exhibition when I visited him. This one particularly appealed as it looks aggressive from a distance, but when you get close to it, you find that the fist is actually protecting a small bird inside it.

“The first challenge of this project was to find a location that would fit with our idea. We did not want a conventional two-dimensional wall that we had done before: we wanted something different, special and unique. We have an ongoing project called Giants that has been realized in several places in the world such as Greece, USA, Poland, Portugal, the Netherlands, Brazil and England, and we will continue now in Canada, but with a difference. As the proposed Biennale has a strong connection with sculpture, we decided to find a place where the painting can be transformed, creating a dialogue between the two-dimensional and three-dimensional worlds. Another aim of this project is to bring new characters to Vancouver while sharing perspectives and cultures and establishing a relationship between the people who frequent this site and integrate this work into the city scenery. The connection between water and land on Granville Island, on the False Creek margins, also had a lot to do with the choice of location. For us, the water acts as a vein, symbolizing life, and it is very present in our work.”- OSGEMEOS.

I chose this because I like writing and reading poetry. Also the lettering is beautiful and there is some irony in having the words 'A poem hangs on the air' chiselled in stone.

Made entirely from Tunnock Tea Cake foils, and easily 8ft long it is a marvel to behold both because of the intricacy and detail in its making and the originality of thought. Senya Malina is a peasant-folk, a character in Stepan Pisakhov's tale "Nalim Malinych". It was on behalf of this Pomor peasant who came from Uyma that Pisakhov's stories were told.
Nothing is impossible for the hero of the tales, "if he wants - he will brew beer on a starry rain. If he wants - he'll go to the sea for fish. Or he will fly to the moon with the help of a samovar and almost die there at the hands of the evil "moon wives".
Senya wears a fur cap with earflaps on his head, a tight-fitting cloak that rescued many Arkhangelsk peasants in the bitter cold, and he wears hand-sewn felt boots. You can't see such boots anywhere nowadays.

Immortalised on the bank of London's River Thames beside the O2 sits a section cut of a former 240ft shipping vessel. Richard Wilson envisioned this piece to be a 'soundbite moment' that would communicate a element of it's former form. For me, this is an extraordinary piece of sculpture due to it's ability to still interact with it's surroundings, not in the way it was originally intended, but to statically mimic it's previous purpose as part of a ship.

This Totem Pole is on a bank of the Grand Union Canal in Berkhamsted, so far from where it originates in Kwakiutl, British Columbia, Canada.

The master carver and designer Chief Henry Hunt, trained under the master carver Mungo Martin who both worked at the Royal British Columbia Museum in Victoria. He is highly regarded as an exponent of monumental Southern Kwakiutl sculpture, his work is exhibited internationally.

This statue is in the Guildhall Square Portsmouth. Portsmouth was the birthplace of Charles Dickens and the statue was unveiled on the anniversary of his 202nd birthday on the 7th February 2014. The delay was because the famous author left strict instructions that no statues of him were to be erected. It is a very friendly and assessable work of art. People have their photograph taken close to him and children love to clamber on his lap.

This sculpture I have always found eye catching and increasingly thought-provoking. The material choice, bronze, is interesting as it visually portrays the dancer as having black skin. While today, this is an everyday normality, in the 1800's it was not common for the black class in Europe to take part in such high class activities. Therefore, Degas in one way or another is challenging and pushing the boundaries of 19th century conventions.

The Hannover »Nanas« by Niki de Saint Phalle are the first open-air sculptures realised by the artist in Germany. The installation of the figural sculptures executed in the Pop Art vocabulary in conjunction with the »Street Art Programme« occasioned a passionate public debate. The one-time provocation is now one of the city’s trademarks. I often drive past this giant sleeping head and love the fact that local Birmingham City FC fans have sprayed the nose blue as fans are known as 'blue noses'. However this piece reminds me of my time in Naples, travelling with friends often up the Versuvio to enjoy ourselves and being greated by the large Pulcinella sculpture in stone, Naples' iconic theatrical comic from 1759. The two heads are ultimately different however both represent pleasure, fun and friendship personally.

This is the biggest sculpture in Bali, it is called Garuda Wisnu Kencana sculpture (GWK). The word Garuda comes from Sanskrit which means a bird whose body is like a human, but the head and feet resemble a bird and on the back there are wings. Of course the Garuda bird is a mythological bird. Vishnu is one of the gods in Hinduism who has a role in maintaining and maintaining all of God's creations. While Kencana means Gold.

This piece by Barbara Hepworth is in the small park outside my house. When St George's Street was pedestrianised in 2008 a sculpture by Dame Barbara Hepworth, Sea Form (Atlantic) was relocated in front of the Playhouse Theatre adjacent to Norwich University of the Arts.

This 1964 bronze was inspired by the countryside and ancient stones of Cornwall, where the artist lived and worked, so there is no local connection. however, it is vey nice to walk past it each day.

This sculpture, in my science department at school, was commissioned to emphasize the role of Science and Mathematics in everyday life.
The installation is made of eighty modules in the shape of a Truncated Octahedron The base is made of concrete pieces that create a link between the sculpture, the floor and the stairs. This base part gives stability to the rest of the construction. The cork "modules" surrounding the lower part of the art piece can be used as informal seating for us to sit on.

Perhaps the most grabbing part of the installation is the section constructed from acrylic forms in four colours. These see-through panels let you see the staircase all the time as you continue to walk down so obtaining a continually different perspective. I like the way the many small parts make a "whole" which is representative of science and life.

St Michael on the Mount Without, Bristol

The recently renovated St Michael on the Mount Without provided a source of income and activity during the Covid-19 pandemic. All theatres were shut during the lockdown which led many to being out of work. This church employed some local set designers to create a large golden infinity symbol, which now hangs from the ceiling of the church to symbolise both God's eternity but the everlasting quality to the church, since it its roof collapsed in 2016.

These two statues are part of a series of sculptures in my local area, Crystal Palace in South London, of dinosaurs and other extinct creatures. In 1850s, The Crystal Palace was built to house The Great Exhibition, and these sculptures were commissioned alongside as the apparent first dinosaur sculptures in the world. They were created by Benjamin Waterhouse Hawkins and expressed the latest scientific knowledge of prehistoric life in the Victorian era, although they are now deemed wildly inaccurate by modern understandings. They featured in the park surrounding the exhibition, and although The Crystal Palace itself burned down in a fire in 1936, the sculptures survived although were falling into disarray. They were most formally renovated in 2001, and are still valued and kept well by the local community, particularly loved by younger children.

This sculputure is on a groyne on Brighton Seafront. It is by Hamish Black and was installed in 1998. It is a torus shape or donut shape, it represents the globe and has skunken shapes of the major continents on the surface. I like the unusual shape and that you only realise that it is a globe when you see it up close.
It catches your curiosity when you spot it standing out on the seafront groyne.

Back in the 14th century, the Tizenhauzen family built a castle right in the middle of Latvia in the town of Ērgļi. It is said that their treasure is still buried somewhere under the castle ruins and these cast-iron guard dogs, sculpted in 2018, stand guard over it. Whilst they stand guard and the treasure remains, the town of Ērgļi will survive. The sculpture was created as part of a project devised by residents to develop and promote the local area.

I lived in Stevenage for 24 years. It is a planned "New Town" built from 1947. There were a lot of imaginative approaches to creating a built environment which supported the development of a new community. There were many pieces of sculpture. This statue stands right in the middle of the town centre, a low build 60's pedestrianized precinct. It formed a focus for people to meet, to sit nearby and chat, and for children to play around. It really conveyed a joyous message about a town built for family life. And the quality of the work, together with its accessibility, says something about the "worth" of people (initially people in council housing,moved out from London) living in Stevenage.

In Seattle, there is the historical Fremont troll. An 18-foot tall stone troll that lives under the Aurora Avenue Bridge. The Troll is a mixed media colossal statue, located on N. 36th Street at Troll Avenue N., under the north end of the George Washington Memorial Bridge (also known as the Aurora Bridge). It is clutching an actual Volkswagen Beetle as if it had just swiped it from the roadway above. The vehicle has a California license plate. Originally, the car held a time capsule, including a plaster bust of Elvis Presley, which was stolen.

In The Lost Gardens of Helligan resides The Grey Lady, a sculpture installed in 2007 by siblings Sue and Pete Hill. In this rediscovered garden in Cornwall, lie many hidden treasures that have been gradually excavated and restored. The Grey Lady intended as one of these delights, that waits to be discovered by passers by.
Originally designed to be a mermaid, taking a nap up the valley from Mevagissey, The Grey Lady, now coined the Mudmaid, has been dressed over time my moss and ivy. Her frame was made from reclaimed materials in the garden including clay dug from nearby foundations of building restoration projects, and tanalised timber leftover from the garden's jungle boardwalk.

Six Bells Colliery was a colliery located in Six Bells, Abertillery, Gwent, Wales. On 28 June 1960 it was the site of an underground explosion which killed 45 of the 48 miners working in that part of the mine. It is now the site of the artistically acclaimed Guardian memorial to those events, designed by Sebastian Boyesen; although the memorial primarily commemorates those who died at Six Bells, it is dedicated to all mining communities wherever they may be.

The Dandi March was led by Mahatma Gandhi during the year 1930. It was started on 12 March 193o and is also known as "Salt Satyagraha" or "Salt March. It was one of the major act of non-violent civil disobedience protest and tax resistance against the British monopoly. In this picture you can see, that Gandhi with his 78 trusted volunteers were moving towards Dandi to break the British salt laws. This march was held in Gujarat( India) from 'Aslali to Dandi'. British monopoly was broken by producing salt by boiling sea water.Finally after twenty- four day march, it came to an end on 6 April 1930.

The unique and colourful long bench has become an iconic part of Littlehampton’s Seafront, featuring in many visitor’s holidays snaps and marketing images for the town. The structure, measuring 324 metres, was designed by Studio Weave with the help of local school children and funded by a regeneration grant and a donation by the family of Body Shop founder Anita Roddick. The slats of the bench are made from recycled hardwood and over 200 of them are engraved with messages and memories from visitors and local people. The bench runs continuously from the seafront kiosks to the East Beach café, dipping, twisting and turning along the promenade. There are two shelters where the bench curves and bends into unusual shaped seats, a favourite photo opportunity with visitors. To purchase an engraved slat please visit the Long Bench Website.

Not only is this figure visually enthralling, but is serves both as a reminder of the coal miners who worked for hundreds of years in utter darkness and as a representation of the passage between the industrial and informative age.

Grey’s Monument is such a daily occurrence to me that I never really cared about it’s meaning until as of late, when I discovered that Charles Earl Grey was a protector of peace during his time. In 1832 he passed the Great Reform Act it was erected for that very reason, with the statue being built by Edward Hodges Baily, and the column being designed by local artists John and Benjamin Green. I just love how much of a statement it is without people knowing the true meaning.

The title Dunamis, meaning power from above, mirrors the composition of the sculpture itself which emulates a sense of strength and power due to the figure's ability to uphold an elephant. Barbara Hepworth : Art and Life exhibition. Impossible to think of sculpture and not think of Barbara Hepworth. The large scale retrospective marking the tenth anniversary of The Hepworth, Wakefield. There was a lot to take in and my hands were twitching to touch the beautifully smooth surfaces, tracing the fluid and continuous contours of her forms. I especially love the use of colour that seems to entice you into the hollowed interior.

This image was supposed to be from my trip to the Victoria and Albert in Kensington in October 2021, however I can't get the image to upload so this from the V&A website.
it depicts the Roman Goddess of the hunt, wild animals, fertility and the Moon. I was particularly captivated by this sculpture because in my personal life I practice Witchcraft and I am particularly drawn to any imagery depicting goddesses and mythological figures. Nollekens has taken care to make sure that we see every single fold Diana's dress and strand of her hair, the detail of his Diana is immaculate. The crescent Moon upon her head really adds to the whimsical feeling I get when I look at this sculpture. I thoroughly enjoyed my visit to the Victoria and Albert especially the Sculpture, Room 22, The Dorothy and Michael Hintze Galleries! I cannot wait to go back.

At the Yorkshire Sculpture Park, the sculptor's life timeline splayed across an iron table. Each marble block is split and the names of his acquaintances are carved in tiny font on the internal faces. The blocks are reassembled and bound by cable, such that we see only a few names exposed at the edges. Although physically mostly a 2D piece, a third dimension - time - is added. As in life, we can see only a few of the networks of acquaintances he knew in any of these periods (marble blocks) of his life.
I spent much time studying this sculpture, reflecting on my own life, and that of others I know. What phases of life have I had? How should they be spaced on a table? What do differences in block size say about me? What access did others have to my networks, and why? And so on.
At first sight, this sculpture appeared quite minor in relation to some of its enormous and emotional neighbours in the Park, but I was entranced by its intelligence and depth. To me, that's excellent art - making me think.

A freestanding, bronze representation of music, in a memorial style, rising into the heavens. It was generated through computer-aided design and translated to bronze presumably through casting. Each module represents an element within a musical passage. A really expressive feature was the surface etched lines, flowing and interacting from each intersecting node, revealing the beauty of a music passage within its structural framework, the also-flowing pillar itself. As these details could only be observed, and appreciated, from close proximity, I was forced to look upwards, as the music transported me there.

The Venus de Milo is a marble statue believed to have been created between 150-100BC by Alexandros of Antioch and discovered in 1820. It's currently in the Louvre, Paris and is said to depict Aphrodite, the Greek goddess of love. What makes it so special is that it is one of the most well preserved Greek statues in existence today. Interestingly the statue was also built to the golden ratio of 1.618 which is often called the number of beauty and is supposed to be visible in all forms of nature and science.

A limestone sculpture of an ogre found on Cleveleys beach, visible only at low tide. The sea washes over him and he is frequently coated in seaweed. This sculpture titles: 'The muse Clio' created by Ernie Kay, was brought to Worlaby, North Lincolnshire in the New Year's Eve of 1999 in celebration of the new millennia, where the resident placed items of significance within the stone base before it was sealed at midnight on New Years Day 2000.
The sculpture depicts two women from Greek Mythology; Cleo, the muse of history and Andromeda, whom was chained to the rocks as a sacrifice but was rescued by Perseus and was released by him.
This is an image I got from the internet since I cannot take a picture myself at this current time, however I particularly like the symbolism this sculpture depicts, as it shows how Cleo represents the history the new millennia brought and how Andromeda keeps the time capsule hidden within, as the lady seems to be chained down the stone base keeping the time capsule protected, so when future generations open this sculpture (like how Perseus released Andromeda), they have a window into a significant moment in history.

For some reason I can't upload a picture of it, but it would a picture of "Dragon" on Temple Bar memorial in the Strand, London. This was created by C.B. Birch in 1880. His style has been described as a "naturalistic veneer upon a classical foundation".

'The Surrey Scholar' was commissioned by Surrey University in celebration of the new millennium. The artist, Allan Sly, was asked that it be 'original, figurative, dynamic (and) contemporary in feel.' I believe this has absolutely been achieved. I admire the energy of the piece and I feel it definitely reflects the rush of student life in a way that is completely timeless. Sly has expertly used negative space in this piece and taken utmost advantage of bronze's tensile strength.

I recently attended an open day and ceremony at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge. During a guided tour I was introduced to this rather unassuming statue on the campus. I found irony in the relatively small, physical, size of the statue considering its significance and symbolism.

This statue depicts the first undergraduate at Fitzwilliam College, significant due to the college's establishment in 1869, and its intentions to develop a more inclusive environment at the university. Fitzwilliam began as a non-collegiate institution to provide Cambridge education to those that couldn't afford a college membership. I found the nature of the statue to be emotive and emblematic of hope and change that was taking place at Cambridge at this time. The statue's presence on the campus appears to be an effective and important reminder of change for inclusivity.

Our village, Oxenhope in Yorkshire, has a Sculpture Trail of six stations all created by people with a local connection. This sculpture, in the form of a hand is made of concrete and set in the church field, reflecting the relationship the church and school have with the village. The sculpture is mounted on a field of pebbles painted by the local school children and overlooks the village, which can be viewed from the adjacent seat. Approached from the rear, it is in the form of a leaf, symbolising the rural surrounds and the viewer has to walk around for the hand to be revealed.

I saw this sculpture on a visit to the Tate with my school last year. For my Art A-Level, I chose to recreate a pastel drawing of this sculpture, adding a 3D effect to it through adding aluminium foil to create depth (also inspired by the Lichtenstein pieces I saw at the Tate on this trip).

I really like this sculpture because it is so simple, almost too simple (not like love actually is- love isn't simple) but it's straight to the point on what it wants the audience to feel.

Antony Gormley: Another Time

This sculpture by Anthony Gormley is made from solid cast iron and stands in the sea just across from the Tuner Contemporary in Margate. The sculpture is part of a series of over 100 cast-iron figures that have been installed around the globe and represent the human experience. Gormley described the sculpture as a way of 'celebrat[ing] the still and silent nature of sculpture' as the work was 'designed to be placed with the flow of lived time'. I remember first visiting this sculpture for the first time on a school trip to our local gallery, the Tuner Contemporary. I was fascinated by the way that the changing tide revealed and concealed the statue over time. The sculpture is incredibly durable as it is made of cast iron and remains a key tourist attraction in Margate today.

This sculpture created by Edward Bainbridge Copnall is made of fibreglass resin with bronze powders. Interestingly this sculpture has suffered damage by a vandal and the eyes of the man were scraped thin of the outer layer- leaving them bare and silver (it has since been repaired by conservators). When i came across this public piece in St Paul's courtyard i loved the fluid shapes and unusual pose of Becket and therefore had to stop to take a picture.

The Journey: Durham

This sculpture is probably the most well known in the Durham area. It depicts six monks carrying St Cuthbert’s coffin to his final resting place: Durham. This however is a bronze casting of the original wooden statue carved by Fenwick Lawson which can be found in St Mary’s Church on Lindisfarne. With Durham Cathedral being such a key part of Durham’s history and architecture, this statue serves as a reminder of how the Cathedral came to be and represents the long journey these monks had to make spanning many years until they got to Durham where St Cuthbert still remains to this day. With the statue being in such a public space within Durham city centre, I’ve seen in countless times throughout my life and have visited/learned about it through all levels of education so far. I like this sculpture because it encapsulates Durham’s entire history and I admire how the original was carved with a chainsaw yet still able to show the pained expressions of the monks.

This amazing sculpture is by Robin Williams. He had it in his studio to fit a new base recently, but it normally resides in St Peter's Church in Cornworthy, Devon, where it has been for the last fifty years since originally sculpted. To me it depicts the sheer brutality of the Crucifixion whilst at the same time showing Christ as a man of the people, a carpenter's son, rather than the usual idolised image of the son of God. There was no need to show more, the legs and feet of Christ were all that was required.

Hi, I'm Isabela Paquet, and this is my chosen sculpture — Donatello’s David. I really like this sculpture, and I am studying it for my Extended Project Qualification (EPQ) essay. Donatello's use of bronze as a medium for the sculpture allows the artist to give the figure a smoothness and gleam which emphasises the youthfulness of the figure. Although the original piece is actually in Italy, a replica is kept at the V&A in London, which I would really like to visit.

The Arc

This sculpture depicting a miner and a steelworker was unveiled in 1996 and designed by David Annand, and inscribed on its base is a bilingual poem by Merddyn Ap Dafydd, that’s shows the toil and collectiveness of manual work. Coal mining and steelwork are both key parts of local history, and many villages used to rely on these industries, before closures in the 20th century. Jonathon Gammond, Interpretation and Access Officer at Wrexham Museum says: “the town has chosen to celebrate the lives of two ordinary individuals, both shown at pavement level, where we can look at each other in the eye. They are hard at work, earning a wage and expecting no recognition. That tells you what is important to the people of Wrexham.”

This is called Pan the Herald by Barbara Foster and is located in the Botanical Gardens in Leicester. I like that it is placed in a green space as it adds to the fact that it depicts a mystical creature/fawn. It is made out of bronze and I love that you can see the clever craftmanship as Foster is able to capture the detail of the fawn's hair really well. I also like how it is mid-movement as it almost seems alive which adds to the magic of it It almost looks like he has skates on which I think is really clever because she has blended a fanatstical creature with the real world which brings it to life in the 21st century.

Being half Spanish, this sculpture has been dotted around my childhood and has become an important landmark for my culture and my memories of my summers spent in Spain. The bull not only is the symbol of Spain, but is one of power, determination and strength. Having driven down the mountainous roads for most of my summers, I have always seen the silhouette of the black Osborne bull but never known it’s history or symbolism - now I know that it was an advertisement for the ‘veteran’ brandy of Herez created by Manolo Prieto in 1956.

This is one of my favourite sculptures that I have studied, mostly for its grossness. This is 10 pints of Quinn's blood, poured into a mould of his face, and permetntly frozen. I find this sculpture fascinating, as it represents so much more than a bunch of frozen blood - links to death masks, Rembrant, and Quinn's reliancy on alcohol make this piece so interesting to me, once you get over the squeamish part!

A mysterious statue nine feet tall in a clearing in the woods at Otterden in Kent. The Lady in the Woods is carved out of an ancient oak tree still rooted in the ground. Surrounded by a shroud of secrecy.

This is a local war memorial that I have always looked at when I have passed it. It is a memorial which is quite central to the town and it is located along the pavement but it is raised. As a result, it becomes more noticeable due to the elevation above street level. The soldier is made of bronze and the base and backing for the lists of names, is made of stone. This combination of both bronze and stone means that each medium is accentuated so it seems to be a more cohesive work. The soldier is not only raised above street level but is also raised above the rest of the stonework. This means that the figure dominates the space more and you are more easily drawn into the work. The stonework is austere and plain perhaps as a sign of respect towards soldiers who have died. Perhaps the simple, linear composition is also to create a sense of a regimented space which reflects the army for whom the sculpture is respecting.

Calmly surveying Langley Hill, near Winchcombe in Gloucestershire, the ‘Langley Drover’ and his dog sit alongside an ancient drovers’ road by which sheep and cattle were brought to local markets. Carved from a seasoned log of cedar wood, by Neil Gow of Stroud, it was installed in 2021 using grants and donations from Gloucestershire County Council’s ‘Growing our Communities Fund’ and the ‘Wardens’ Countryside Fund’. Popular with walkers on the Gloucestershire Way, the figures replaced a similar, smaller carving from 1999, chainsawed from ash, that collapsed in 2020.

I often find public sculpture an intrusion in the landscape, but these had such force and personality and were so primeval that they worked wonderfully. They spoke to me about both physical strength (they needed it to endure in their coastal location) and vulnerability. They made me think about time, and how short human existence is.

I saw this in Berlin and thought it had a lot of pathos. At a time when mothers in Nazi Germany were expected to sacrifice their sons for the “greater good” of their country, Kollwitz’s sculpture challenges the romantic ideology with the reality of child loss. With her face buried in her child’s limp body, the mother clutches him tightly with her arms. Although she anonymised her subject in ‘Mother with Dead Son’ to universalise the Mother’s experience, her contemporary audience would have been taken aback by this sculpture which redefines maternal grief. They would have been familiar with the religious iconography of the Christian Pietà (the Virgin Mary, holding Jesus after he is taken off the cross), and would have felt jarred by Kollwitz’s secular narrative in its place; There is no hopeful suggestion of resurrection, but merely devastation and resignation in the face of death. Kollwitz’s rejection of both Christian iconography and Nazi ideology reveals her disillusionment and speaks up for a generation of women who felt betrayed by the false virtue of sacrifice.

Chairs at Himalayan Gardens, North Yorkshire

The artist wished to reflect the idea of the height of the Himalayas and to fit the piece into the landscape of tall trees which surrounds it.

"The chairs are designed to be a place apart, where visitors can relax and reflect on the beautiful landscape.”

Each chair is made from the heartwood of the giant redwood, which is native to California, but has been planted extensively throughout the British Isles since its introduction around 1850. Liam tries to use only those which have been felled as a result of disease.

Along the main pedestrian thoroughfare known as the Avenue, a fight to the death is underway between two men of bronze; Bältespännarna (”The Knife Wrestlers”). The story of what they’re fighting over is told in a series of relief pictures that wrap around the base of the sculpture.

Bältespännarna (literally ”the belt binders”) is a romantic nationalist sculpture by Johan Peter Molin. It depicts two men who are fighting over the same woman in a mythological form of duel known as belt-binding. The two rivals are each given a knife and bound together at the waist with a belt.

On the base, the reliefs describe the different phases of the belt-binding drama. On three of the sides there are also looping, serpentine runic inscriptions.

Every time I walk past the statue of Constantine outside York Minster, I take a look at him, sat on his throne, sword in hand, he’s calm and in control - like he knows the world is about to change and he’s the one changing it. There’s a confidence in that pose, a reminder that this was the man who became Roman Emperor and made Christianity the empire’s official religion. The statue, created by sculptor Philip Jackson in 1998, marks the spot where Constantine was proclaimed emperor in AD 306. It’s not just a tribute to a historical moment - it’s a symbol of authority, belief, and the sheer weight of one decision echoing through centuries.

This sculpture, or rather sculptures are located in Dublin and were commissioned as a tribute to those who suffered durning the Irish Famine. I remember as a child driving/walking past these and feeling dread. The figures are not proportional- they are abnormally tall, terribly skinny with hallowed out eyes and cheeks and tend to be clutching belongings or even a child. The sculpture creates a space of mourning and remembering; honouring those who suffered through the famine as well as migrated. The location is also important as it is where some people took small boats to join a larger one headed for another land.

This is a gold plated statue found in stowe gardens, in this location it has been meticulously planned that from every monument and sculpture you are able to see two more sculptures. This specific sculpture is really beautifully positioned that when standing directly in the central point in front of it the woman's hands perfectly cover her private parts. This resonates to the idea of vulnerability and can be linked to the story of Adam and Eve and suddenly feeling vulnerable in her natural skin.

As someone who lives in Birmingham, I walk past this statue by Antony Gormley regularly yet its sheer size is something that never fails to amaze me. Standing at 6 metres tall, including the feet which are buried beneath the pavement, and weighing 6 metric tons. The statue leans 7.5° backwards and 5° to its left. When i was younger ,the statue intrigued me as i used to think the statue held reference to the superhero Iron man. Though as my passion for art and its history developed, i discovered that it represents the traditional skills of Birmingham and the Black Country. With its raw exterior and industrial look, i feel it captures Birmingham's industrial history perfectly.

'Wings of Glory' by Adrian Landon was a really interesting sculpture to see at Chatsworth House! The mechanical Pegasus is raised 20' in the air and requires at least four people to activate as eight buttons must be pressed simultaneously. This was genius because suddenly the sculpture forces you to seek out others in order to appreciate it's full potential. I love this sculpture because although the self-reflection evoked by so many art pieces is important, the sense of community fostered by Landon's 'Wings of Glory' was an incomparable experience!

A sculpture depicting the mining history of my home town, Swadlincote, created by Ray Londsdale

This sculpture was created to display a father giving words of encouragement to his son both holding miner's lamps. This sculpture was created as Swadlincote and its surrounding areas were once heavy coal mining areas, however now the mines are closed. The scupture reads, "Don't worry son, it's just a hole in the ground where you'll find your roots"

This sculpture was created out of mild steel in 1965, commissioned by the South Derbyshire Nationan Union of Mineworkers, with Londsdale creating multiple sculptures depicting struggles around the UK.

'Chimps Are Family' exhibition

In 2023 the 'Chimps are Family' exhibition by Marc and Gillie Schattner came to Kingston upon Thames. The exhibit had a series of chimps around, some of them fighting or sleeping or just gesturing. I chose this photo because the statues were meant to inspire people to interact with them, touch them and become closer to real chimps. They also all have QR codes to scan and learn about the real life chimps each are based on, educating people as well as endearing them. The wonderful interactive quality of these statues is part of what makes me love them, they're meant to be touched, to be mimicked, to be loved and the medium of the bronze captures that love, makes them brighter shinier where they have been touched.

Jacob and the Angel

By the 1930s canny showmen bought some Epstein sculptures and toured them for decades as a kind of freak show. Epstein was too broke to protest. Eventually four of them, including Jacob and the Angel, were displayed in the ‘anatomical department’ of Blackpool’s Tussaud’s. A loudspeaker booming across the sands invited revellers to visit ‘the strangest thing you have ever seen’. Up to 17,000 people a day came to stare. A few years ago, my husband and I visited Jacob and the Angel at Tate Britain; the couple are currently entwined in their eternal embrace at the top of a quiet staircase. For the moment, all is calm.

King George the First (1714-27), marble statue by John Michael Rysbrack: Cambridge

George I was the son of the grand-daughter of King James I (VI of Scotland) and the Elector of Hanover, Germany, and was not altogether happy to be in Great Britain.

This statue by Rysbrack and another of George II by Wilton were commissioned by Cambridge University in honour of its King and benefactor. They follow the fashion that royalty looked best in the guise of a Roman Emperor.

The statues were displayed for many years in the University Libraries before being moved to the Fitzwilliam in 2012.

Anish Kapoor, Sky Mirror

This is Anish Kapoor’s Sky Mirror (2001) outside Nottingham Playhouse. The large stainless steel disc reflects back an image of the buildings in front as well as the sky above. I love how the shiny surface appears always slightly in motion as the clouds progress above and light glistens on the mirror, giving different effects by day, when it looks grey or blueish, or at night, when it reflects the warm fairy lights along the playhouse bar. I also enjoy how its sleek ultramodern concave form sits in contrast to the tall Georgian and nineteenth century buildings in this part of the city and stark angular lines and rectangular planes of the 1960s theatre building. And I like how it shifts your viewpoint on the environment by flipping the world upside down, which also seems to fit how art and theatre - like any mirror - are mimetic, reflecting the world around, but from an sidelong angle, and fits the sculpture’s placement near the city’s theatre for modern drama and new writing.

On holiday in Monaco near the palace i saw this beautiful sculpture which was a tribute from the Foreign colonies to H.S.H. Prince Albert on the occasion of his 25 years of reign. It was created by the artist Constant ROUX. I thought it was incredible how it wasn’t fully carved out of rock but instead carved so its half in rock and half of the people so I loved how it was detailed in some places yet partially blurred in others.

There is a mountain in Germany (the Scheuerberg-Neckarsulm) and at the top of the mountain you could see faintly a glowing statue. It was not until recently that I walked through the vineyards to the top of the mountain. The placement of this statue watching over the village is incredible and one can find beauty in the journey to the statue itself and the views (especially the sunset) at the top. The statue was placed there in 1895.

This is one of the many derby rams which are situated around derby. There are 30 which are all made of fibreglass and are made with local sculptor, Michael Pegler, who made the stone ram which is on Derby’s east street in 1995. Which I think is pretty cool. They were all auctioned off to raise money for Derby Museums’ Endowment fund which has helped to secure the future of Derby’s museums!

I personally think it’s really exciting as it was the first big thing our city has done to be proud of itself and has since modernised the market hall while still keeping the charm. It shows the upward trajectory of improvement i know a lot of us in Derby want and need!

I liked the transformation of everyday/ recycled objects - crockery - into lichen, it made me smile. Lichen is beautiful and mysterious to me, kind of unknowable, a miniature world, magnified here so it's possible to explore it as a landscape and imagine clambering through it rather than our usual giant's viewpoint.

I just went to the Columbus Museum of Art at the Pizzuti and saw this as I walked in. I didn't catch the name but I LOVE pink. Close up the circles have glitter on them and I just found it very striking with the stones and angles and movement of the fabric over top. It was very organic and not at the same time - like me :)

This is a photo of a sculpture I found in the National Museum of Catalonia in Spain. I’ve uploaded this one as it’s a statue that I did studies of in my art lessons.

This giant monumental artwork made of concrete is located close to where I live in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. It marks the historically lowest point of the Netherlands, over 7 metres below sealevel. Me and my mom just call it ''the disk''. The island is 52x52 metres square and located in an artificial lake that's part of a public park.

Bronze Margot Fonteyn Statue

This is a picture of the bronze statue of Dame Margot Fonteyn a famous prima ballerina who was born and grew up in Reigate. She is depicted in the statue as the water spirit Ondine as this was her favourite role to dance. It was unveiled by Margot Fonteyn herself in 1980 and was originally closer to her birth place but has since been moved slightly further away. I particularly love how the movement of the dance has been captured in skirt in particular as it really brings the statue to life.

'Victory Over Blindness'

The statue was commissioned by Blind Veterans UK (an ex-service person sight loss charity). It is located in Manchester at the train station and was made by the sculptor Johanna Domke-Guyot who was inspired by a photo of WWI veterans, blinded in combat, leading one another from the front. It was unveiled in October 2018. The statue depicts seven blinded soldiers leading one another away from the battlefield with their hands on each other for support. It is situated on the ground and at eye level to engage passers-by, rather than on a plinth. I have seen this statue on trips to Manchester and it makes me consider the impact of the First World War.

I particularly like the detail in the soldiers which makes the statue more serious and thought provoking.

Trevi fountain -Rome

This isn't from my area, as I am from bath- but it's one of my favourite pictures I took of the Trevi fountain when I visited Rome. The more you look at the fountain, the more details you spot- its great!

Auguste Rodin’s Age of Bronze

This version of Rodin’ iconic Age of Bronze is found in Zurich’s Kunsthaus Museum. I find the theme of reproduction really interesting because I then saw another version (but it’s essentially the same as its a cast!) in the Victoria and Albert Museum. I love the story behind it as well that when it was first shown no one believed a sculpture could be so realistic, and many accused Rodin of creating a cast of a real person to make it!

Frink's Dorset Martyrs Memorial

The three figures are situated at the end of the road where I live, they have become something I walk past daily. Being able to further my knowledge of the work and the history of my hometown is extremely rewarding, learning that the individual figure(to the left of the picture) is an executioner, and the two remaining figures are martyrs.

The Fallen Icarus

It was difficult to choose! In the end I chose this sculpture of Igor Mitoraj, a Polish sculptor. Not near where I live (Amsterdam), but seen during a holiday last year. The fallen Icarus is now permanently installed next to one of the ancient Greek temples in Agrigento. We also saw his sculptures exhibited at the archeological site at Syracusa (Sicily). Amazing to see his sculptures, based on Greek myths, side by side with these ancient Greek monuments.

The peterborough arch

The Peterborough Arch is a famous wooden sculpture located at Thorpe Meadows in Peterborough. Created by artist Lee Grandjean in 1988, it was designed to welcome people into the city and was inspired by the architecture of Peterborough Cathedral. After years of weather damage, it was restored and returned to its original location in 2025. Today, it remains one of Peterborough’s most recognisable landmarks!

This "Rueckert Monument" commemorates a visit paid by the poet and scholar Friedrich Rueckert to a friend in Bad Rodach, Germany (more than 200 years ago). In 1976 the newly formed Society for local history and culture initiated this project. If it were not for the text, passers-by (whether locals or visitors) might not guess the connection between the poet and this sculpture.

This sculpture is of French writer Victor Hugo who spent around 15 years of his life in exile in Guernsey. The octopus limbs that make up the back of the bench reference his writing The Toilers of The Sea.

I am drawn to this sculpture due to its ability to both highlight local history and interactive element with people able to sit next to it as if in conversation. The feather in his hand is not a permanent feature but a temporary prop placed by a member of the local community, sometimes people also give him scarves or hats.

I choose this beautiful bronze sculpture placed on the facade of the main entrance of the Ustinov Studio Theatre in Bath. The piece has a special connection to the building as Igor is Sir Peter Ustinov son. I think the sculpture represents hope, imagination, and artistic freedom. The winged figure appears to be reaching towards the sky, suggesting ambition and the pursuit of new ideas. Representing the performative arts with positive message and inspiring symbol for the studio. The sculpture has elongated proportions and expressive angled lines representing movement and depth. I also like the contrast with the stone facade and the texture bronze surface. I really enjoy the fact that the sculpture provides a modern contrast to Bath’s historic heritage, showing that the city celebrates both.

Mother and Child - Henry Moore

On visiting UEA, I came across this beautifully rendered sculpture in the Sainsbury’s wing… The soft curves and smoothness on both the mother and child’s body helps connect the two, creating a cohesive sculpture whilst still showing them as two separate entities defined by their soft edges. I love Moore’s purposefully created gaps to evoke absence of particular body parts as well as his inclusion of noticeable ones, such as each specific toe on the child’s foot.

Family Of Man

This is a Barbara Hepworth work at Yorkshire Sculpture Park. I love it. I loved walking around it and taking in the view, and do the same every year when I visit. Each season is a different view. I initially loved to imagine the different characters the forms represent, but have moved on to thinking of her creative processes. In Cornwall last year I visited her studio and the exhibition there. It’s wonderful. The trip was a full circle moment for me: my first encounter with Barbara Hepworth as a child and coming across (falling in love with) a piece in the Abbot Hall Park, and having looked more into her art over the years, I felt as though I was beginning to understand the woman, the artist, who created the art.

If you ever get the chance to visit these places or see her art, I highly recommend them.

Inspire by James Ort

I chose Inspire by James Ort, which will be part of a sculpture trail in my town later this year. It represents all the different elements of the community, like the town hall and the tennis club, which I think is a lovely way to represent Watlington in art. Even the shape is deliberate, paying homage to the white mark on the hill, another piece - I love how it embodies the art community and makes us appreciate where we all live and one another.

This is 'Picnic Area' by David Fryer, It is a human-sized mouse trap and serves as a pun playing on the idea of the park being "tourist trap" with the facade of it being a public amenity.

I've chosen Bernini's sculpture of Apollo and Daphne which I was absolutely transfixed by on my trip around the Galleria Borghese, Rome. I often struggle to connect to sculpture, especially stoic one's in contrapposto, I most commonly come across in the everyday streets of London, but found the dynamism and level of detail in Bernini's sculpture just incredible. I particularly loved how Daphne's toes were turning into roots, and think it's an incredible moment to depict, a moment mid-transformation.

This sculpture of "the veiled women" created by Antonio Corradini who was a Venetian sculptor which I was drawn to in the Old Masters Picture Gallery in Dresden. The most incredible art gallery I've been fortunate enough to visit. Sculptured from a single block of marble, the veil that's made to cover the women's face was meant to signify purity and modesty.

Lady Godiva - Coventry

This is "Self Sacrifice" by Sir William Reid Dick, although it's better known locally as the Lady Godiva statue. I chose this statue as I find its relationship to the city - especially its people - intriguing. Godiva herself is something of a folk hero, everyone who's grown up in Coventry knows who she was and has likely walked past this statue but I don't think many of us - including shamefully myself - can say we've ever really stopped to appreciate it. The statue is more-or-less scaled to real life and made from bronze but sits on a tall, stone plinth. I also want to note that the way she is depicted in this statue is much more sombre than the defiant woman we're taught about (and proud of) which is somewhat reflective of the men commissioning and sculpting her in the late 1930s.
