Catholicism and Capital Punishment

Dulles, Avery Cardinal. “Catholicism & Capital Punishment: Avery Cardinal Dulles.” First Things, 1 Apr. 2001, www.firstthings.com/article/2001/04/catholicism-capital-punishment.
This source is written by Cardinal Avery Dulles, a renowned theologian and Jesuit priest. This is a trustworthy source because he is a member of the Catholic church and a trusted Jesuit teacher. He speaks about the death penalty, saying that there are four main reasons that it should exist: rehabilitation, defense against the criminal, deterrence, and retribution. These four reasons, he believes, are the foundation of the argument for capital punishment.

My Opinion

I believe that the death penalty is necessary for society to be more scared of committing crimes. It also allows an easier way to rehabilitate criminals before they die. It may seem messed up, but when a criminal is put close to their death and there is no way of being rehabilitated when they go to the outside world, this is the best option for them. This is why the death penalty is necessary to keep a stable society.

“Consequentialism.” Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy, www.iep.utm.edu/conseque/#SH1b.
This source is from an official encyclopedia, specializing in terms of philosophy. Consequentialism is the idea that morality is based on producing all kinds of the right consequences for an action. This idea of consequentialism shows that one's actions will affect the consequences they receive, but those consequences will always be right. In this case, if someone kills another, their consequence would be to lose their life as well.

Wisconsin Should Adopt the Death Penalty

Marquette Law, 1996, scholarship.law.marquette.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?referer=www.google.com/&httpsredir=1&article=1544&context=mulr.
This source is from a professional, John C McAdams at Marquette Law. This is an excerpt from a thesis paper he wrote on the death penalty in the state of Wisconsin. One of his strongest arguments is the argument that deterrence is not completely stopping the crime, but may make the criminal hesitate. Having the death penalty is showing how wrong their actions are and why they shouldn't commit them.

It provides many statistics and situations in which the death penalty was effective. It does not condone all death penalty but believes it is necessary when someone continuously commits heinous crimes and must be stopped. A very prominent quote from this article is: "...to sentence killers like those described above to less than death would fail to do justice" because it is not equal to their crime.

What side that I thought had won was the against side. This is because first of all I personally agree with it but also because the argument is more convincing. This project helped me understand the other side better but overall the death penalty is wrong. I believe there were some great points made about the death penalty being wrong, such as the reference to the story of Cain and Abel and God's mercy.
