First Destination - The Standard Oil Company

While this tour is not necessarily in chronological order, our first destination happens to be the earliest operation on our list. Founded in Ohio by John Rockefeller in 1870, the Standard Oil Company quickly rose to power thanks to Rockefeller's expert business sense. In order to maintain that power, Rockefeller established trusts: A system in which multiple large companies in a certain industry all hold a significant amount of power and seem as though they're competing. However, in reality, they're all working together to establish a monopoly.
This destination was chosen as our first destination due to its sheer significance; two laws would end up being passed thanks to Rockefeller's technique.

While the progressive era was a time where great wealth was accumulated, there were less pleasant events happening as well. In 1887, congress passed the Dawes Act, meant to Americanize the Indians. Our stop, The Carlisle School, is just one example of many places where Indians were sent and subsequently stripped of their culture, heritage, and self-image in order to become more "American."

Third Destination - Tuskegee Institute of Alabama

The next stop on our list is the Tuskegee Institute of Alabama. Its significance is derived from its founder, Booker T. Washington. Founded in 1881, this was a huge step for African Americans in gaining rights. Washington believed that blacks would only obtain rights through wealth and education, rather than just speaking out about it like the uncivilized. This ideology, however, would clash with another Civil Rights Activist: W.E.B DuBois.

While we're stopping for lunch here in Springfield, I'd like to mention there was a huge race riot here in 1908 in which 2 blacks were lynched and 4 whites were killed. W.E.B Dubois is here to talk a little about the issues of race in this era.
"As African Americans, it's a mistake to assume that our rights would come with time. The riot that happened in this place is a good example.
