Founded in Ohio by John Rockefeller in 1870, the Standard Oil Company quickly rose to power thanks to Rockefeller's expert business sense. In order to maintain that power, Rockefeller established trusts: A system in which multiple large companies in a certain industry all hold a significant amount of power and seem as though they're competing. However, in reality, they're all working together to establish a monopoly.

Its significance is derived from its founder, Booker T. Washington. Founded in 1881, this was a huge step for African Americans in gaining rights. Washington believed that blacks would only obtain rights through wealth and education, rather than just speaking out about it like the uncivilized.
