Dred Scott was a slave that was bought by John Emerson. He belonged to him until John died. Dred and his family then came under John's wife. Dred Scott tried to by his family's freedom, but Eliza refused. The state court had declared Scott and his family free, but another court overturned that decision. The US Supreme Court declared that a negro, whose ancestors were imported into the United Sates and sold as slaves, whether enslaved or free, could not be an American citizen and therefore had no standing to sue in federal court. This caused outrage in the anti-slavery groups.
