Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a very common virus that causes rashes, sores, and blisters on the hands, feet, and mouths of children. HFMD is caused by viruses of the Enterovirus family, typically either Coxsackievirus A16 (most common & mild), Coxsackievirus A6 (less common & more severe), or Enterovirus 71 (rare & most severe). The virus is highly contagious and is spread through saliva, bodily fluids, and feces.

This article details the promising results that antiviral peptides have shown against Enterovirus 71, which is one of the less common, but more severe viruses that can cause HFMD. The study identified possible peptide therapeutics that could be further chemically developed to fight against Enterovirus 71 and possibly lead to a vaccine (yay!).

Methods to prevention transmission:
There is no vaccine (yet) for HFMD, so the best way to avoid it is to take preventive measures like these:
1. Wash your hands!
2. Clean/disinfect surfaces that are frequently touched.
3. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth (easy places for the virus to sneak into your body)!
4. Isolate your children if they have HFMD and avoid contact with anyone who may have it.

Treatment:
Most cases of HFMD get better within 1-2 weeks without any treatment, but some symptoms can be painful and uncomfortable, so doctors recommend that children:
1. Take over-the-counter medicine to relieve fever/pain.
2. Stay hydrated.
More severe cases of HFMD may require more elaborate treatment plans from a physician.

How old the patient is (HFMD is most common in children, not in adults)
2. What the patient's symptoms are and if they align with the common symptoms of HFMD
3.

Just last fall (my very first week of college), I actually had HFMD and had never even heard of it before. Since it isn't common in adults, I thought it would be interesting for me to share. I had a super sore throat, felt tired, and had some other weird symptoms, like my fingernails falling off and my hands and feet blistering like crazy. It was super weird and the 'fever' symptoms wore off in under a week, but the weird rash and fingernail symptoms lasted for months. It was a VERY strange experience and felt like it lasted forever. I ended up transmitting it to my boyfriend and he had blisters on his face, so it was really interesting to see how the symptoms varied from person to person. Eventually, the skin on all of my fingers and toes completely peeled off. I literally felt like I was shedding.
