At the Potsdam conference dividing Korea by the 38th parallel was proposed. Under US, capitalist rule fell the Republic of Korea (south) and under communist rule fell the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (north).

In the Truman Doctrine the US president promises to help any country facing communist takeover. 

In 1950 the civil war in China ends and a communist China is born, ruled by Mao...this made the US more weary of communism in asia because of the "domino theory".

June 25th, 1950 - After negotiations between Stalin and Kim 2.0 Sung...North Korea successfully takes the capital of South Korea, Seoul. 
US forces were sent to Pusan on a counter attack and rolled onto Chinese borders. China responding by attacking.
Even if the US had made it to the divide between North and South Korea by early January communist forces once again has Seoul.

The war ended with the same borders as how it started..along the 38th parallel. 

The war had avoided going nuclear between the US and China, which was secretly backed by the USSR. 

The war resulted in 5 million Koreans dead. 

Not only were Korea's borders the same, but they were left with the same poverty and issues as before the war.
