The entire Canada-Huawei saga, begun with the arrest of Huawei’s chief financial officer. This however was Canada interfering with the United state’s business with China regarding the same company Huawei. Canada is now termed as being caught between two economic giants, USA and China as Canada has significant relations with both countries. 

The climax of this case for Canada was the arrest of Meng Wanzhou, who doubles as CFO and daughter of Huawei’s chief executive officer, Ren Zhengfei. Canada is said to have followed instructions from the United states. She was accused of bank fraud and deliberately misleading US based financial institutions as to a relationship with Huawei and Skycom (a Hong Kong subsidiary). 

Meng Wanzhou’s arrest was issued based on the extradition act. Due to this act, the United states has also formerly called for the extradition of the CFO. The white house also made statements on case, saying she will get involved if the case will establish a new beneficial trade deal with china.

However, Canada stands on the fact that Men’s case will be handled according to the rule of law.

The Chinese embassy in Canada made a statement in an interview with the globe and mail. The said embassy says the arrest of the top executive, is a “political conspiracy” by Canada and US. The ambassador also dismissed Canada’s prime minister’s assertion that he had no role in the case. 

When asked about the former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig who was detained in China, the embassy remained silent. The detention of this diplomat came after Beijing had sent out serious warnings on the consequences of the arrest if Ottawa did not release Ms. Meng. 

While all this was happening, many wanted to hear what Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had to say. On a video and article by global news, he was questioned. A summary of his response was “appropriate decisions were taken by the appropriate authorities”. 

Mr. Trudeau said his government had no involvement in the arrest of Ms. Meng who was detained at Vancouver airport. However, he made mention of the fact that Ottawa was given advanced notice a few days to the arrest. When questioned about the CFO facing extradition to the USA, he declined to give father information. Mr. Trudeau also denied having a conversation with the ambassador or Chinese premier. 

However, amidst all these developments, we continue to await the outcome and final decisions taken on the case. Ms. Meng has been granted bail and access to her gadgets even though copies of the date have been made.
