         <title>Tallmadge Amendment-1819</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Description:</strong> The Tallmadge Amendment took place in Congress when they were debating whether Missouri should be admitted as a state. Representative James Tallmadge of New York proposed an amendment that essentially stated that Missouri could only enter the United States as a free state. <br><br><strong>South View:</strong> This angered Southerners because many believed that Congress had no place to put regulations on slavery<br><br><strong>Northern View:</strong> Many Northerners were pleased because they didn't agree with the morals of slavery.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Missouri Compromise - 1820</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Description:</strong> The Missouri Comprise added Missouri to the United States as a slave state and changed Maine to a free state in order to keep the balance. People had been worried about a biased Congress by adding Missouri, but when Maine requested to become a free state, the balance remained. <br><br><strong>North and South View:</strong> Both the North and the South were happy with this decision because it kept the peace, but both were disappointed to not have the favor in Congress.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>Nat Turner&#39;s Rebellion - 1831</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Description: </strong>Nat Turner, who was a slave and a preacher, along with sixth other men traveled from house to house killing white people. At the end, there were about 40 people in the rebellion and about 55 people had been killed. <br><br><strong>South View:</strong> Probably fearful of the power that had come from just a single rebellion. <br><br><strong>North View:</strong>&nbsp;I don't know if a lot of people were happy because they were rebelling, or if many didn't agree with using violence. I'm sure some of both. </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Description: </strong>From 1836 to 1844 a set of strict rules was applied to the House of Representatives that prohibited the topic of slavery to be discussed or merely brought up. <br><strong><br>South View: </strong>Southerners were probably very happy because they believed that the government didn't have a right to tell them if they should be able to have slaves or not. <strong><br><br>North View: </strong>The Northerners were probably very angered by this because they wanted the government to say that slavery was illegal.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <title>California Applied For Statehood - 1849</title>

The other lands that were won from Mexico could decide whether they wanted to be a free or slave state. <br><strong><br>South View: </strong>The South was mad that California entered as a free state because the North would have a better position in Congress. <br><strong><br>North View:</strong> The North was happy because they would be put in a better Congressional position.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Description:</strong> This was a law that was part of the Compromise of 1850 that required Northerners to return all runaway slaves from the South back to their owners. <br><br><strong>South Views:</strong> The South was happy because runaway slaves was viewed as a problem for them and having a law that required them to be returned was beneficial to their businesses. <br><br><strong>North Views:</strong> This law was opposed heavily by the North when it was put in place and they were angered that this law existed because their lands were free.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

Unfortunately the proposal was unsuccessful. <strong><br><br>South View: </strong>The South didn't agree with this proposal because they agreed with slavery and were very happy that it was unsuccessful. <strong><br><br>North View: </strong>The North wanted this to be passed because they didn't agree with slavery and didn't want it to spread even more.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Description:</strong> Dred Scott, a slave, sued because he was a free man after he was taken to free territory. The Supreme Court ruled in favor of his owner, saying that African Americans were not citizens, so they did not have the right to sue. They said that slaves were property and that Congress could not make any laws regarding slavery, so the Missouri Compromise was ruled unconstitutional. <br><strong><br>South View:</strong> The South was happy because Congress could now not put any laws regarding slavery and slavery was protected. <br><strong><br>North View:</strong> The North was angered by this decision because it protected slavery.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>
