We selected this topic because their story, "The Dream Nine," helps us see the real struggles and risks that undocumented immigrants face. Especially young people who grew up in the U.S. but lack legal status. It normalizes immigration issues beyond just statistics or politics. In selecting this topic, we learned about broader issues, such as deportation and the challenges faced by the U.S. immigration system. The story of the Dream Nine inspires others to get involved, speak, and work for social justice and political change.

They risked their safety by voluntarily leaving the U.S. and attempting to re-enter without legal documentation. The Dream Nine also risked permanent separation from their families. In addition, The Dream Nine is important because the national attention they received brought attention to the immigration issue.

The Dream Nine originated in Phoenix, Arizona, and started in 2013. There were nine young people who did not have legal papers to live in the U.S. They crossed from Mexico into the United States when they were babies. They wore graduation caps and gowns to show they wanted to continue their education and get the opportunity others get, even if they don't have legal status. Six of them had lived in the U.S. before but had to leave, and three others joined to support them. Their protest was part of a bigger movement for the DREAM Act, which helped undocumented students get a path to citizenship if they wanted to continue their education. The Dream Nine’s actions got a lot of attention and the challenges young immigrants face.
