         <description><![CDATA[<div><em>Before reading - Did you know that the average North American throws away four pounds of trash every single day? What happens to all that trash? Brainstorm as a class!</em><br><br>Use the following link to play the story <em>Here Comes the Garbage Barge</em>! Don't forget to enable 'CC' (or closed captions) so you can read along!<br><br><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xb3bXKAkeek">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xb3bXKAkeek</a><br><br>After the story is complete, use chart paper and markers (chart paper is located under the teaching computer at the front of class) in your desk groups to answer the following question...<br><br><strong>What is the purpose of this story? Is it to entertain, explain, or inform/teach students?</strong><br> - Did the author describe real or imaginary characters? Places? Events? <br>- Did the author try to make me laugh? (entertain) <br>- Did the author tell me a story? (entertain or explain)<br> - Did the author give me facts? (inform)<br> - Did the author try to teach me something? (inform) <br>- Did the author try to change my opinion about something? (persuade) <br><br><strong>Make sure to answer in full sentence form with examples! We will be reading our answers to the class after 15-20 minutes of brainstorming and writing. Any groups that are not completed will not move on to the next step of this activity (using Lego) until they are completed!</strong></div>]]></description>
